Show was good. Very cute as well! However very very short ( just shy of 45mins) so factoring the ticket price with the length of the show; an expensive 45 mins.

    Definitely worth watching!

by Roxete on 2010-02-14Festival Place - Sherwood Park

These kids did an amazing job. I loved how they put the whole play together and made it so much fun. The humour was totally cute. Our 6-year-old daugher loved it. The length of the play was perfect for our family as well. A must see.

    101 Dalmations

by ShakingAlberta on 2010-02-14Festival Place - Sherwood Park

Though my 4 and year olds loved this performance by a great cast of small children we were disappointed that it didn't come near to the hour we were promised at the beginning. It was 40 minutes and that included a 5 minute musical interlude at the beginning and a number of bows and tails wags at the end...30 minute stops. After travelling from out of town, 1 and a half hours, and having given the tickets for a Christmas gift I had expected more length and perhaps more in story detail. Nice try, great if tickets had been $10-$15 each but overpriced for what we got.

    101 Dalmations a bit of a dog!

by EllenF on 2009-11-23Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

After seeing television commercials, an article in People magazine and an appearance on the Today Show of many of the canine stars of the show, I was really looking forward to the show. The live dalmations were only on stage for a matter of minutes at the end of the first act and at the end of the performance. The promos would make you beleive that the dogs would actually be on stage for a major part of the production but of 2 hours we are talking about maybe 5 minutes! The tv commercials even show one of the dogs going out in the audience! Didn't happen. At least it would have been nice if the dogs had been introduced on stage after the end of the performance. A lot of $$ for tickets for what you get!

    Rough Rough

by Jstar1461 on 2009-11-23Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

I should preface this review by saying that I saw a great production of Wicked the day before in Cleveland, and promptly returned home from Detroit to start looking for tickets to another Wicked performance next year. I bought tickets for 101 Dalmations with a 10-year-old little girl in mind, and I think I aimed a little too low with this production. I had red that the "humans" in the show performed on stilts to create a size disparity between themselves and the actors playing the various animals, and it was a great idea for the presentation. However, even the aforementioned little girl couldn't understand why the animal actors weren't even wearing something as simple as dog ears or a nose in the way of a costume. White shirts and pants painted with spots would have been fine – except for the capris on the mother dalmation – but even a dash of make-up or some felt ears would have gone a long, long way for the actors to "go canine" for young children. Considering the target audience, the pace of the production also languished at times with a few too many ballads. They tease patrons with the addition of live dalmations in the promotional materials, but their role is a cameo at best. And the dog trainers are visibly, and not successfully, working the dogs onstage from behind the scenery (ever had a neighbor who wanted to show what his dog could do, only to have the dog look at you like, "I have no idea what he's talking about?"?). Cruella De Vil was so over the top, it felt like a send up of a send up of Gloria Swanson. And I'm old enough to remember the original Disney cartoon, and, much to my disappointment, the "Cruell De Vil" song was not part of the production. Rent the movie and save your money until Wicked comes to town!

101 Dalmations - fun but not fantastic.

by formerwindsorite on 2009-11-22Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

The music was good and the show was fun. I loved Pongo's character. But the human characters were stilted - no pun intended but an appropriate term. Too bad the director chose to use stilts - the audience would have overlooked dogs the same size as humans, if we can accept talking/singing dogs as the premise for the whole show. Cruella DeVil was disappointing. Real dogs were a nice touch. Too bad we couldn't have seen more of them. And - why were there several references to "10" puppies for Pongo and Misses, but only 8 in the show?

101 Dalmations was great for both kids and adults

by CanadianDad on 2009-11-22Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

My 6-year old daughter was thrilled by the site of real dalmations in the lobby before the show and on stage, but was equally enthralled by the story focusing on a couple's decision to have children, the bonds between family members, and the usual kid-show themes of kids being brave and getting rescued from bumbling bad guys. The songs were well crafted and cut across a variety of moods and styles -- including some reggae beats in the tune "Be a Little Bit Braver". Overall production values were better than kid-show standard, but lower than big Broadway or Disney shows. Set panels wobbled and sometimes malfunctioned, but not the to point of distracting from the music and story. The singers all had nice clear, expressive voices in the classic Broadway bright style. The dancing was very good, even though the human characters had to dance on stilts, making it part dancing and part acrobatics. The child actors and actresses were first rate - good at both dancing and singing. The pleasant surprise was how entertaining and touching the show is for adults. The show includes some tearjerking tender songs including "A Perfect Family", "One True Love" and "My Sweet Child". And, Rachel York was by far the strongest performer as Cruella -- as a maniacal seductress including a scene at the end when she is being turned on by flames (without crossing any boundaries that kids would notice). Also a pleasant surprise was the fact that the lobby did not include the usual kid-show gauntlet of over-priced toys or souvenir popcorn containers. It was a "real" first rate musical theater experience that we could enjoy and share with our 6-year old daughter. I would definately recommend it, with or without kids in tow.
