simple presentation with maximum impact
by DanSinOttawa on 2011-02-15National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaFor one person on stage, we were blown away by the number of characters WaaWaate Fobister presents us with. At one point, he acted out a conversation between several people and never lost the captivated audience. His recounting of his tribe's history was impressive and engaging. I can honestly say that this is one play that will stay in my memory in great detail for the rest of my life. If Mr. Fobister stays the course, he will go places, whether he decides to pursue acting or writing. The set was about the size of an average living room. There were very few props, and little in the way of costumes. Yet one could not take their eyes off of Waawaate Fobister. and his chameleon like ability to immerse himself in his characters. Agokwe was also a study in contrasts. At many points hilarious, it has just as many moments that were heartbreaking. It was highly entertaining, but also has a serious message that one would have to be tone deaf and blind to not get it. During several points in the play, there were presentations on screens surrounding the action on the stage. The group I was with all agree on how utterly fantastic this play was. All of us would go see it again in a heartbeat if we got the chance.
