About

With the release of Love Ritual in 2010, soul singer and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Al Green reminded the world exactly why he so richly deserves legendary status. Featuring a remix of retro hits and rare tracks, Love Ritual is a nostalgic predecessor to his 2008 album Lay It Down, which featured a collection of earthy, soul-infused songs epitomizing his iconic sound from the past four decades. Green's concerts feature a mix of old favorites as well as new, contemporary takes on classics, and fan excitement runs high during his intense, bluesy riffs and highly charged vocal improvisations. Lay It Down spawned a major European tour, with ticket holders thrilling to the singer’s low-and-smoky take on “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?,” as well as his gospel-powered romance anthem, “Let’s Get Married.” His newest release follows similarly with throbbing, gutsy vocals and pulsating rhythms.

As much a showman as a singer, Green entered the performing arena during the 1960s, emulating the singing styles of heroes Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke. Green hit the charts with “Tired of Being Alone” and his slow, sexy sound and charismatic interpretive style catapulted him to R&B royalty. After the platinum “I’m Still in Love with You,” Green produced a string of hits, including the iconic “I Feel Good” and fan favorite “Let’s Stay Together.” By the 1980s, Green made ministry a primary focus in his life but still found time to stay on top of his R&B career — Rolling Stone magazine included him on its list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Today, the Reverend Green is a fully ordained pastor who continues to go on concert tours whenever possible. With the release of Love Ritual, a new generation can experience the thrill of listening to one of the world's greatest R&B musicians.

Al Green was great, the crowd was dead. Show started late, the seating was disorganized. The organization of the seating and crowd was poor. The ushers sebnt you to the wrong section. Many people sat in the wrong seat as they could not figure out where their seat was and got frustrated.

    Still the same voice

by JADIVA on 2010-11-08Casino Rama - Orillia

After a one hour delay (due to problems at the Border) Al Green took to the stage. He apologised for his delay citing problems with the Border Patrol and then continued to joke about it throughout the show. He is such a lovable entertainer and the audience was very tolerant of the continued joke. While the changes of aging is evident in his appearance, his voice has not changed, still the voice that you pay to listen to. He was nattily dressed and gave out his customary red roses to the ladies at the front of the stage. He also gave away his tie, his pocket handkerchief and his towel (I will pass on that one). I was a little disappointed that he did not sing some of his signature songs in itheir entirety. Best part of the show for me was when he revisted some of the older songs sung by the likes of Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, etc. FANTASTIC. Another high point for me was his rendition of Amazing Grace which featured the vocals of of his three daughters who were his back-up singers - AWESOME. The show was only an hour and 10 minutes long and so I was a bit disappointed with that. It appears that he sometimes forgot the words of the songs, but did a good job of filling the gap by focussing on the band members. Was a good enough show, but not as good as when he performed at the T-D Jazz Festival a couple years ago, I am still loving my Al Green.

    The greening of Al

by Aryncan on 2010-11-08Casino Rama - Orillia

By the time Al Green took to the stage he could do no wrong. He sang what everyone attending wanted to hear, the standards and classics and covers. He is a true showman. I do however find the handing out of roses to clamouring women quite hoakey as well as giving his handkerchief, towel with sweat on it, and clip on tie to members of the audience. It was unfortunate that the show started one hour late at 10:00pm due to a major delay at the border. Even with three members of his band missing the sound was great. He performed a tight 1hour and 15 minutes and eventhough the late start was not his fault, an encore (or two) would have made the crowd feel that much better.

    disappointing

    by Banana9 on 2010-11-08Casino Rama - Orillia

It is understandable when things happens and are out of your control such as Al Greens band being held up at customs from 10am to 5:30pm as was told by Al Green to his audience. However, that his fans were denied the full 1 1/2 or 2 hour show that they paid for is not understandable. After having to wait outside with a large mass of people in an unorganized lineup for 1 1/2 hours (8 to 9.30pm) before the doors opened (no explanation provided as to delay during the wait) to allow us to be seated, we were then even short changed on the duration of the show. I would call that disappointing!

I almost missed a good show because of the wait!!

by missq on 2010-11-08Casino Rama - Orillia

After being told the show was delayed for 1/2 hour, we were hoarded into a room for another 1/2 hour...just waiting . Nobody even bothered to announce what the delay was. So we stood, gathered like cattle for an hour wondering if there was even going to be a show!! My husband tried to convince me to leave but since we had drove an hour to get there, I was not leaving!! It was extremely frustrating the Rama did not advise why the delay. This experience actually put a bad taste in our mouth and it was now very hard to get excited about the show. Well, we did not leave. We stayed and watched the show and Al Green was great!! Comedy mixed with a beautiful, soulfull voice and beautiful songs!! I would recommend seeing Al Green!! Just not at Rama!!!
