THE BAD PLUS IN CONCERT:
Avant-jazz sensation The Bad Plus is the kind of band that must be seen to be believed. Comprised of bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson, and drummer David King, the genre-defying trio specializes in combining '60s jazz with indie rock elements to arrive at a thoroughly modern sound. At their improvisational live shows, the group transitions seamlessly from rhythmically steady pop anthems to heavily syncopated jazz arrangements. In addition to their extensive catalog of original material, The Bad Plus dazzles ticket buyers by deconstructing familiar rock hits by artists as diverse as David Bowie, Black Sabbath, Radiohead, and Queen. That kind of innovation makes them a wickedly entertaining live act that never fails to deliver one-of-a-kind performances on tour.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Avant-garde jazz trio The Bad Plus played together for the first time in 1990. Bassist Reid Anderson and drummer David King had played in indie bands together as teens, and they linked up with pianist Ethan Iverson for one show before parting ways to pursue their own solo projects. It wasn't until 2000 when they crossed paths again for a one-off gig in Minneapolis. Realizing their creative instincts and undeniable chemistry were special, the threesome committed to the project and released their first record, 2001's The Bad Plus. Their nonconformist style and impressive musicianship turned heads and garnered best-of honors from The New York Times and Chicago Reader. A deal with Columbia Records followed and their first major release, 2003's These Are The Vistas, was critically praised for its eclectic collection of original compositions and ambitious covers of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Blondie's "Heart Of Glass". Since then the band has earned a reputation as a must-see live act, performing frequentyly at jazz clubs as well as symphony halls and rock festivals. Over the course of their decade-spanning career they've released ten studio albums including 2009's All I Care, for which they teamed up with vocalist Wendy Lewis, and 2014's The Rite Of Spring, which rearranges Igor Stravinsky's classic ballet Le Sacre du Printemps.
