    Terrible Concert!

by TerriblyDisappointed on 2010-12-13The Great Hall - Toronto

Being a big fan of his work, I was very excited to finally see Badly Drawn Boy in concert. That excitement did not last long. The promoter failed to mention that Damon would not be bringing his band with him. Instead he played mostly solo, with occasional accompaniment from two roadies who clearly did not know the material. It was obvious that Damon had no desire to be at the concert and continually stopped playing songs to launch into obscenity laden rants about how horrible the sound was and how he was going to leave. After playing short portions of several songs he yelled out that the concert was over and left for 10 minutes. Eventually he returned to again spend more time swearing than actually playing fragments of music, or singing over prerecorded material. By the mid way point of the set more than half the audience had left. The complete lack of professionalism and disregard for his audience shown by Badly Drawn Boy was quite incredible. The promoter and Badly Drawn Boy owe everyone a refund and an apology.

What a night and what a show! You know it's good when I'm not even going to complain about the parking ticket I received at 11:46pm. From the first song, "Don't Go Far" (find it on youtube) to the "Like a Virgin" cover, it was a fantastic set - in fact an extended set including a moment where he duet-ed with himself (had to be there!) Damon is a real performer, so much so he got into it a bit with the sound guy because he wasn't happy with how his guitar was sounding. And you know, I actually appreciated that it mattered so much to him. No complaints from the crowd though - we took in every single note gratefully. So, yes, I highly recommend. You will love his shows if you are a fan of indie rock, interesting lyrics and mellow, layered music.
