About

Christopher Plummer's Tony Award-winning tour de force is an unforgettable portrayal of legendary actor John Barrymore, a man of colossal talent and contradictions, and one of the greatest Shakespearean actors of all time.

It's all here in William Luce's "fiendishly entertaining" (The New York Times) play: the wives and the women... the drink and the profanity... the notoriety and the glory... in an evening of great theatre that is made all the more indelible by Christopher Plummer who is "nothing short of sensational" (The New York Post).

With the entire original Broadway creative team reunited, BARRYMORE returns to Toronto's historic Elgin Theatre for 30 performances only.

    Barrymore was superb

by JfromTO on 2011-03-16Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I really wasn't sure what to expect from a one-man show and was a bit nervous even though I love Mr. Plummer. Well I need to fear. Mr. Plummer takes you on an unforgettable journey - through the goods times and tragic times of John Barrymore's life. I can't say enough good things about this - it was the perfct blend of laughter and pathos. At the end of the show I was very sad that it came to an end as I wanted more. But carrying a 2 hour show by yourself is a feat and Mr. Plummer did superbly!

I really enjoyed Christopher Plummer as John Barrymore. He was charming, roguish, and facing his ghosts.

    Barrymore delivered in spades!

    by DM21 on 2011-03-10Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I experienced this event on March 08th. It was truly unforgettable. In the 90 or so minutes, my emotions went from laughter to tears welling up in my eyes. I felt the regret and longing in the portrayal of John Barrymore. From the moment the incomparable Mr. Plummer walked on stage I was immersed and hung on to his every word and action. Anyone who had the misfortune of not seeing Barrymore missed out on a legendary performance. They just don't make performers of this caliber anymore. The standing ovation at the conclusion of the play was truly deserved.

    A very remarkable actor

Plummer may be too old to play a younger Barrymore but he's so good that you forget that. The play is great, the performer is greater.

    Don't miss this one!

by smoothc on 2011-03-07Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Mr. Plummer received a standing ovation from the entire audience. The place was sold out. Nobody was disappointed. My husband and I were in the first row, centre stage. What a thrill it was for us.. About the play itself: I noticed some parallels between the life of John (Jack) Barrymore and that of the now infamous Charlie Sheen. Let's hope for Charlie's sake that his career doesn't end the way Barrymore's did. I give the play and the performance two thumbs way up.

Plummer was an amazing representation of John Barrymore. His ability to capture the audience in a solo performance is astounding, and worthy of a Tony!

Barrymore, a display of REAL showmanship, not hype

by sisterofps on 2011-03-07Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Oh the tragedy! Irreverant, touching, and funny. A view into a man's soul within an hour. I will go back and watch all his old movies (both Barrymore and Plummer).

    Humbled by Plummer's Brilliance

by Pcydchick on 2011-03-07Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I hope that anyone who cares about theatre can get to see this show. From the moment Christopher Plummer enters the stage you recognise that you are witnessing greatness. Alone, save for the off-stage voice of his wonderful prompter Frank, Plummer holds you spellbound, moved, hilariously amused and totally humbleld to have been a part of his audience. There is no other actor like Christopher Plummer in the world and therefore there is no other show like "Barrymore".
