BATTLES IN CONCERT:

Battles’ stunningly complex and undeniably fun experimental rock is just as cerebral as it is cathartic for audiences. Each member adds a necessary component to their joyfully adventurous sound in concert, starting with the chopped samples and grooving basslines of Dave Konopka. Ian Williams pulls double duty, tapping lightning fast licks on his guitar with one hand while hammering out insane synth runs with the other. While these two blast off into outer space, drummer Jon Stanier pounds out driving drum rhythms that are sure to get ticket buyers bouncing to the beat. As the band plows through mind-blowing favorites like “Ice Cream”, “Atlas”, and “The Yabba”, audience members won’t be able to resist Battles’ swirling sonic textures, hard-hitting rhythms, and mind-blowing instrumental prowess.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Featuring a veritable who’s-who of underground virtuosos, Battles has carved out a unique and adventurous space in the experimental rock scene. Drummer John Stanier (Helmet), guitarist/keyboardist Ian Williams (Don Caballero), guitarist/bassist David Konopka (Lynx), and guitarist/composer Tyondai Braxton got together in 2002 to start Battles. After a couple of EPs, the quartet released their full-length debut Mirrored in 2007 to widespread acclaim thanks to their use of cutting-edge looping technology in a rock context. Just as the group was making a name for themselves, though, Braxton decided to split with the band in 2010 to focus on his goals as an avant-garde composer. The remaining three members soldiered on with the celebrated 2011 album Gloss Drop, focusing on instrumental rock while featuring guest vocalists like Gary Numan, Matias Aguayo, and Kazu Makino. The trio continues to thrill audiences at their amazingly energetic live shows and explore new sonic frontiers with their stellar recorded material, including 2015’s La Di Da Di.

    BAND OF THE FUTURE!

by Anonymous on 2011-10-06The Phoenix - Toronto

Battles is one of the most under-rated bands and are 20 years ahead of their time. The talent and inspiration that this band puts forth in a concert is remarkable. John is such a well rounded veteran on drums that the consitancy hurts; Ian and his mustache are an absolute phenomea in and of themselves; and Dave is just a mastermind of loops. I saw the concert a couple of days ago and had time to reflect and realized that these guys need so much more resignation than they have received. Battles is a band of the future. They are amazing. This is coming from someone who laughed at his brother when first recommending them a couple of years ago, now I am a TRUE believer. RESPECT THIS BAND

    The NEW Battles...

by Eriatarkan on 2011-05-01Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

I've been a huge Battles fan since the EPs, and I wasn't sure what to expect with the new Tyondai-free lineup. It's certainly a new band - they didn't play anything from their earlier releases, and I'm actually glad that they didn't. All the signature octaved guitar sounds and pounding drums are still there, but the guys are now sequencing a lot more parts in addition to their maniacal looping. This definitely took away from the live experience a bit, but not enough for it to affect how strong and full the overall sound output was. Two skinny video screens were set up in the middle back of the stage that displayed each of the four respective guest singers featured on Gloss Drop (Matias Aguayo, Gary Numan, Kazu Makino and Yamanataka Eye), which was pretty cool because they clearly recorded the content just for their live show. Dave, Ian and John are probably still getting used to the three-piece setup, and it was really cool to see them working with that. I look forward to seeing these guys again soon.

    Worth every penny

by Guyface on 2009-09-05Terminal 5 - New York

Let's be honest, I showed up too late to see Pivot. But, from what I heard on their myspace, I wasn't entirely amped up to see them anyway. Although, a friend of mine said they rocked proper. Flying Lotus totally threw down. He was actually my favorite act of the evening. I, like so many others, had showed up to Terminal 5 for the sole purpose of seeing Battles do their thing. But I ended up taking a lot more from Flying Lotus' set home with me. Truth be told, I'm not entirely sure what !!! (or Pivot, for that matter) are doing on Warp records. While I did enjoy !!!'s set, it's not exactly what I've come to expect from the record label who put guys like Aphex Twin and Squarepusher in the forefront of the electronica scene. To be perfectly honest, it's a hipster funk band. I suppose Warp needs to keep up with the kids in Billyburg. It's cool. They're a good band. Now onto the meat and potatoes: Battles. We were lucky to hear some new material and, for me, this was my first Battles performance. So, seeing their setup (i.e. their use of loopers and MIDI controlled vocal sequences) was a treat. They were tight, but they kinda looked like they needed a vacation. I almost felt bad for the drummer at one point. The man worked his ass off. No encore. Lame. But, all in all, I had a great time. I enjoyed everyone I saw and I slept like a baby. Definitely keeping my eye out for the next Flying Lotus set.
