About

BEIRUT IN CONCERT:

Beirut combines orchestral pop with world music to create intriguingly complex songs that are also infectiously catchy. Bandleader Zach Condon helms everything from vocals to flugelhorn to bring a uniquely diverse sonic palette into each sugary-sweet pop confection. In concert he surrounds himself with top-notch musicians, who infuse the band's indie rock sounds with eclectic folk instrumentation. By incorporating so many different influences, Beirut makes their concerts feel like a globe-trotting adventure for ticket buyers, who can’t help but sing along to familiar favorites like “Elephant Gun” and “East Harlem”.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Zach Condon was born in Albuquerque, NM in 1986 and raised predominantly in neighboring Santa Fe. Though his experience in jazz band taught him how to play trumpet and helped him gain an appreciation for complex musical expression, Condon dropped out of high school at 17. The budding prodigy was exposed to the diverse musical traditions of Europe on a soul-searching trip abroad, and he immediately began incorporating a wide range of international styles into his home recordings. Adopting the moniker Beirut, he released a collection of demos as his first full-length album Gulag Orkestar in 2006. The record became a surprise hit following the viral success of the music video “Elephant Gun”, leading Condon to put together a live band for an impromptu tour. The lineup stuck, and the group’s 2011 album The Rip Tide converted an entirely new segment of fans when the single “East Harlem” was featured on Pitchfork’s Best New Tracks. After a period of intense personal issues, Condon thrilled fans in 2015 with the announcement of Beirut’s fifth album No No No. As they continue to tour the world, Beirut seems destined to absorb the musical influences of every place they visit, incorporating each new sound into their signature chamber pop masterpieces.

    Absolutely wonderful

by mariamjs on 2015-11-16The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Beirut has been my favourite musician since the moment I heard his voice in high school, so you can imagine the high expectations I had allowed myself to dream up when fantasizing about ever attending his concert. Even the opening act (Hailu Mergia) was so phenomenal I began to have doubts that a band could outshine them. But when Beirut took the stage, all those doubts dissolved because there really is no one better to listen to live. This is easily the best concert of my life, and 100% believe no one can captivate an entire audience so totally as Beirut did that night. Utterly incredible; thank you for making and sharing your music :)

    Beirut is hugely underrated

by 00000Mike on 2015-11-16The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Beirut makes really great, original music which can be quite visceral. Their concert in Toronto was no different. The instrumentation and vocals were spot on and the layering of harmonies was something rare to see in a contemporary band. If you have the opportunity to see Beirut live, go see Beirut live. You won't be disappointed.

    Beirutmania at the Danforth!

by Leon1371 on 2015-11-16The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Beirut met and exceeded all expectations at the sold out Friday show. The place was buzzing and the energy was contagious. He went on to put one hell of a show to the adoring and excitable crowd. Can't wait to see him again in Toronto.

It was fantastic. Our seats were terrible, in the nosebleeds, and still I managed to enjoy the whole show. They are wonderful musicians. Even better live than recorded.

It was good, but not as good as Toronto 2011

They're a great band, good music, but their performance was a lot better in the past, in my opinion.

Great show - Rhythmic and soulful

by EdwardPyetimetravel on 2012-07-30Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Being a fan I'm obviously biased but Beirut was all I expected they would be. Sometimes good bands can let you down live, but Beirut was electric. The Orpheum is a great place for their unique sound and the crowd were very into the show. Overall 5

Very good show. The sound was awful to start, which is atypical for shows at the Orpheum. Really glad we were able to leave our seats, and rush the stage. The band sounded much better at front stage. The horns were exceptional.

    Beirut with guests Indians

by islandgirlmaddy on 2012-07-30Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

I have never been to the Orpheum Theatre before, and I must say it is absolutely breathtaking. The architecture, chandeliers, paintings and stage itself left me in awe. Add Beirut on stage and you have a life time experience like no other. The opening act was Indians, and he will definitely become more recognized in no time at all. A one man show that is worth looking up. Beautiful voice, piano and guitar playing as well as some electronic tones. Very good. Upon seeing Beirut in concert, I had only heard about ten of their songs; from what I had heard, I liked. After the concert, I am now enamored by their music. This band was incredible. I have no words that can do justice for the performance they gave. The energy they exuded was so powerful and positive, it carried through the entire crowd-such an amazing feeling. Everyone was standing up at the end swaying and dancing to their music, absolutely lovely. Their stage presence and interaction with the audience was charming, humorous and so very memorable. And their music..I never wanted the night to be over. It was so rich and lively..indescribable how good Beirut truly is. I feel very lucky and blessed to have seen Beirut in concert, for this was unlike any concert I have ever been to.

    good enough

by Anonymous on 2012-07-30Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Was really looking forward to this concert for months. But personally, I think they sound better on cd than live in concert. The drummer and the accordion were the most fun to watch and they were smiling and bopping to the beat of the songs, but the rest of the members seemed tired or not very enthusiastic to be there. Musically, they preformed alright. Not amazing, but not bad. It was still nice to see a favourite band of mine preform, but I don't plan on watching them again live.
