The Echo Beach seems to be a nice concept for middle size concerts. However, people get really scattered throughout the sand area. Since the floor is not properly level, you risk getting into a lower part with a higher part in front of you, so it's really hard to see anything. So you have to search for a higher part in the sands. Also, Bjoerk did not help. Since everybody is a bit far from the stage, it is nice to have large screens. They have it at the Echo Beach, but Bjoerk was never actually shown on any of them, as she decided to use the screens to show some animations. This means that if it was just a little lady jumping there instead of Bjoerk, I would not be able to tell the difference.
I was very happy to see one of my favourite artists Bjork! She played a variety from all her albums including "One Day" with her percussionist playing it on two hang drums! That was phenomenal!!! "Army of Me" was also pretty awesome. Her show also incorporated other crazy instruments like the tesla coils and even pyrotechnics! Great performer and great music! The cons: The opening acts were not very good, could be a taste thing but the music was terrible and the sound was bad. The subwoofer was turned up so loud that I couldn't hear much else. It even was like this at the beginning of the Bjork show but then they fixed it thankfully. The venue was interesting but there was a severe lack of water especially during one of the hottest days of the year! After the show we were very hot and dehydrated but we couldn't get any thing to drink because the vendors were closing!
I am primarily a death grips fan but the overall experience with Bjork as the header was positive. Death grips played something like 8-10 songs. Their sonic approach was a strong contrast to Bjork, who had with her a choir, a percussionist and a dj. I was less familiar with the later part of Bjork's work and so I was less enthused about her opening songs, which were mostly choral, epic and rhythm-free. Her voice and choir preformed strongly and while I was not familiar and therefore less receptive with some of her music, I could appreciate the power of their voices mixed with rich ambient soundscapes and peculiar precussive sounds. Her performance was littered with rich visual graphics, featuring space, the cosmos, underwater life, pulsating grids as well as a tesla coil. During Bjork's more upbeat and rhythmic songs, the choir as well as the audience danced hard to techno-ish beats amidst the sand and the heat. Her set was something like an hour and 15 minutes and featured only one encore. As a fan of her earlier work I was left wanting more.
While the opening act was noisy, overlong and forgettable, Bjork puts on a great show. Loved the energy from the stage and from the audience. A good mix of older hits and newer material - including some intriguing new versions of the older songs. The 14 woman choir backing her up was incredible for the quieter moments but also for the raucous dance party at the end. The electronic instrument lowered from the rafters led to a lot of neat moments and gasps. Excellent beats. Decent but overpriced venue, tricky to access via public transit, especially if you don't bolt for the door after. Projections were good. What a strange costume for such a strange performer... but she's quite a musician. Too bad the lighting was erratic though.
The show opened up with a couple of forgettable artists. Not they they were not talented, but their angry style of music was not a good fit for the beautiful energy that Björk projects to her community. The day was hot and sweaty, but once that women hit the stage, I for one was so engaged that I felt like I was the only one there, and nothing else could be a distraction. Björk's set was carefully crafted to be a calming beginning and each song slowly was building to a energetic dance party by the end. Björk does not come to this area of the world very often, and this is a must attend event.
This show was something else. I'm quite familiar with Bjork and her music but I wasn't expecting such an amazing show. Her singing was flawless. And that percussionist guy, wow, what a musician. Another nice surprise was sound quality at the venue. I've never heard such low basses at the live show before. It was amazing and probably the best show I've ever seen.
Very exciting show with a wide variety of selections from Bjork's entire catalogue with a fair amount coming from her latest effort Biophilia. Songs like Joga, Hunter, One Day and Hidden Place were sublime. A fine percussionist, Icelandic Choir and DJ technician accompanied Bjork. There was also what looked like a pipe organ - not sure if it was played though as I couldn't see a player and they may have been for show. A real treat was hearing Army of Me which I have not heard performed live since 1995 at the Warehouse (Koolhaus)! All in all it was a very magical evening and Bjork was extremely appreciative of the large audience and delivered a powerhouse performance. She is truly in a league of her own and an extremely compelling live performer indeed. Opening act Death Grips became very boring very quickly and I missed the other opener due to traffic.
