About

BLACK MOUNTAIN IN CONCERT:

Canadian psych rockers Black Mountain always lay it on thick with their hypnotic grooves and spacey jams in concert. Using the fuzzed-out ‘60s as their freaky launch pad, the group stirs up propulsive beats, warbling keyboards, overdriven guitars, and driving basslines to take listeners on a sonic adventure. Vocalists Stephen McBean and Amber Webber lead the heady experience as they howl, harmonize, and chant their trippy lyrics together. Meanwhile the rest of the band explores trippy territory with atmospheric echoes and wailing solos that elevate standouts like “Rollercoaster”, “Mary Lou”, and “Stay Free” to new heights. When the last hallucinatory note rings out and the house lights come on, ticket buyers will be grateful to Black Mountain for taking them on this eye-opening journey.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

After leading Vancouver-based cowpunk outfit Jerk with a Bomb, Stephen McBean shifted his focus to fuzz-laden acid rock in 2004 and started Black Mountain. The band hit the ground running, releasing their self-titled debut album in 2005 and finishing out the year as an opener on Coldplay’s Twisted Logic Tour. In 2008 they enjoyed a huge breakthrough with their sophomore album In the Future, which was shortlisted for a Polaris Prize (the award given to the best Canadian album of the year) and nominated for a Juno Award for Best Alternative Album. Since then the collective has spawned multiple successful side projects including Pink Mountaintops, Grim Tower, and Lightning Dust. Despite these successful projects the band remains committed to mining the intrepid sonic nuggets of Black Mountain—a worthy endeavor that yields stellar results like their acclaimed 2016 album IV.

The female singer was awful. Very disappointing. I was expecting much more based on other things I had heard.

    Black Mountain Surprise

    by Nic22 on 2010-06-25Republik - CALGARY

Was very surprised at how good these were live. I wasn't very aware of their songs before going, but they are great for dancing and a bit of moshing lol. The crowd were also so into it and lively which really added to the show. Overall I had a brilliant night and would definitley go see them again.

    Halloween Fun

by awareness on 2009-11-02RICKSHAW THEATRE - VANCOUVER

We arrived early to the venue just to check it out, it was still pretty quiet as Rabies took the stage. Plenty of people in costume all over the place and a good vibe already to the night. It was my first time at the Rickshaw Theatre which has recently been booking some pretty impressive acts with very affordable ticket prices. I left to get something to eat around this point and missed the rest of Rabies and Sorceress who followed. We return later to find the place packed an pumping. Bison had taken the stage and were in costume as ICP for Halloween. They played an absolutely rockin' set and I've got to say that their bass player in particular has one of the most energetic stage presences I've ever seen. Finally, Black Mountain came on around 11pm. Stephen McBean dressed as Jesus, Amber Webber as what I guessed was the Corpse Bride, Jeremy Schmidt in drag, Matt Camirand as some sort of sailor pig, and Josh Wells down out in full 80's hair metal regalia. Their set began with two songs, Wilderness Heart & Rollercoaster, that I am hoping is soon to be released material of a new album. The crowd was alive and rocking but still fill focussed on this superb performance. Since the last couple of times I saw them play they seem unbelievably even better than before. Wucan, Queens Will Play and Stormy High follow from their last album as well as the b-side Bastards of the Light and anothe new track Don't Run. Black Mountain's rhythym section sets about a groovy hipnotic pace that is fleshed out by Schmidt's spacey organ and keyboards, Webbers often etheral Grace Slciesque vocals and McBeans incredible guitar playing. They conclude the first part of there set with Bright Lights from their In the Future LP which starts off very ambient and mellow but progressed into a mind-blowing hard rocker. A brief break filled with ecstatic fans and applause is soon cut short as the band quickly returns to stage to first play the epic ITF centerpiece Tyrants and finally to bring the house down completely the ever popular and totally funky Druganaut. I leave totally stoked having been front and center between Webber and McBean the entire set and fully satisfied that I've seen the best Black Mountain set yet and hopefully not my last.

If you missed this show, I feel pity for you.

by goldfishyo on 2009-11-01RICKSHAW THEATRE - VANCOUVER

Wow, what an amazing show. Got there when Rabies was already playing. They were pretty rad. Sorcerers came on and were amazing. They sounded fantastic in a big room like that. Bison. What can you say about Bison. They were the highlight for me. They've been touring so much, and they sounded so tight. The Insane Clown Posse makeup was hilarious. Finishing this show with Black Mountain was icing on the cake. I don't know if the sound guy was trying to crank it up to follow up Bison but I think they could have sounded better in that room. Not to take anything away from them, they were great and everybody I was with had an awesome night. Good job Rickshaw, Look out Commodore you've got some competition for best live venue in town.
