Boston Celtics History

The Celtics are one of the most successful franchises in NBA history. They are tied with the Lakers for the most NBA Championships at 17, and hold 10 conference titles and 33 division titles. They’ve retired 25 jersey numbers — the most of any franchise in the league.

The franchise was founded in 1946 and won their first championship in the 1956–57 season, which was the start of the most dominant run by any team in NBA history. Powered by Bill Russell and coached by Red Auerbach, both of whom are now Hall of Famers, the Celtics won 11 NBA Championships in a 13-year span.

Russell won the NBA MVP Award five times in that stretch, and teammate Bob Cousy also was named league MVP once. Of their first 11 championships, seven came against the Lakers. It began a cross-country rivalry that is still one of the league’s fiercest today.

The Celtics won two more titles in the '70s and finished the decade by securing Larry Bird in the 1979 NBA Draft. That began another dominant stretch in which the Celtics went to the finals five times in seven years and won three more titles. The Celtics did not return to the finals until the 2007–08 season, when they were led by the "Big Three" of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. They once again beat the Lakers to win their 17th championship.

The Celtics most recently advanced to the NBA Finals in 2022, but eventually lost in a competitive series to the Golden State Warriors. The team was led by current stars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.

Boston Celtics at TD Garden

TD Garden opened in 1995 and replaced the original Boston Garden, which housed the Celtics for 49 years. In the nearly 30 years it has hosted the Celtics, TD Garden has been renovated three times: in 2006, 2009 and 2014. The latest renovations added a new HD entertainment board, a see-through shot clock and an LED lighting system to the exterior of the building.

TD Garden also houses The Sports Museum, which features memorabilia from various sports teams and events in the area, including the Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins, Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. It also features sculptures of some of the most legendary athletes in Boston's history, including Larry Bird.

    Alcohol Service

by Jaycd on 2017-01-24TD Garden - Boston

We are Canadians in our 40's and could not get a beer without a passport. This should be communicated clearly through Ticketmaster when tickets are purchased

A little pricey for nosebleed seats

by MrMacPhisto on 2016-11-16TD Garden - Boston

It was a little expensive for nosebleed seats, but the entertainment value was decent.

Great game but Lebron did not play

    by markmc272 on 2015-04-15TD Garden - Boston

Great game. Would have been better if Lebron and the rest of Cleveland Star players had played

    Only downside was the score!

by towerpants on 2014-12-03TD Garden - Boston

Easy to get to, sits right over the subway stop, and TD Garden is a very nice arena with good sight lines. We sat in Loge 18 Row L about 10-15 rows behind the Celtics basket. Excellent seats for the money, comparatively speaking. You can see and hear the action very clearly. Other than the score (the Celtics got trounced by the Spurs) the only nitpick I would have is the cost of the concessions. You may want to eat and drink before arriving as everything is pretty expensive

Great basketball - "entertainment" too much

    by Iceman3 on 2013-03-20TD Garden - Boston

I go to these events because I love basketball - that is the entertainment for me. I always find the music way to loud and way to often. When did you start blasting music during the play? You can't even talk to the person/people who came to the game with you! I actually brought ear plugs with me to the game this time.

How could it ever be less than 5 stars!!??

    by Bird33 on 2013-02-09TD Garden - Boston

A 20+point good ole fashioned beating of the Lakers in the Garden, Howard fouled out and KG hits the 25k point milestone....the only thing missing was Rondo and Sully (That would be my 6 star rating:-) PS oh yes...and our good friend Gino made an appearance and then we really got to see Kevin celebrate a little with some moves. It's fun watching KG watch Gino he gets such a kick out of it :-)

    Celtics Won Just For Us

by CelticsFanGirlfriend on 2013-01-07TD Garden - Boston

The seats in the 300 balcony sections are not bad at all! I was worried they'd be nosebleed seats but I wasn't willing to spend a $130 a ticket to sit in the 200's. However I'm pleased to say the tickets I got while they were much cheaper were still just as good. We had a good view of the court and the atmosphere up in the balcony section was phenominal. The jumbotron was constantly showing people from our section and the row behind us was picked as the Celtic's lottery lucky row. There was so much going on you almost missed some of the amazing plays the Celtic's made that night! Definitely a great experiance.

    Celtics Game

    by Jlc46 on 2012-12-05TD Garden - Boston

Game was awesome, but I'm from Montreal so I used to the crowd being a little more loud and into the game. Maybe it's different for NBA games than MHL games. But all in all great place to be!
