Bagpipe virtuoso Carlos Nunez is one of Galicia's foremost musical ambassadors, celebrating the Spanish region's unique Celtic heritage with his renowned prowess on a variety of traditional instruments. Whether he's piping out tunes on the ocarina or the gaita (Galician bagpipe), Nunez displays his technical skill with the charisma of a pop star, impressing ticket buyers with both his musicality and his captivating stage presence. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Carlos Nunez was born in the Galicia region of Spain in 1971, where he began playing the bagpipes at age eight. By his teens he was performing at festivals, and later he was quickly acknowledged as a virtuoso during his studies at the Royal Conservatory in Madrid. After performing for several years with the Irish folk outfit The Chieftans, he made his solo debut in 1996 with the album Brotherhood of the Stars -- Spain's first Celtic traditional recording to reach platinum sales. Over the course of ten more acclaimed albums Nunez established himself as the country's preeminent Celtic musician, leading to worldwide touring and collaborations with luminaries like Ry Cooder and Sinead O'Connor. An animated showman with an animated on-stage personality to match his incredible musicianship, Nunez continues to fill the air with the sounds of Galicia on his unforgettable tours.
This is the second time I've seen Carlos Nunez perform. The first was at the Edmonton Folk Fest a couple years a ago. He ensures the audience has ample opportunity to participate & his use of local pipers to assist his shows provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase the local talent.
