I first saw Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's work last year in London - a performance of Sutra, which I thought fantastic. So when I had the chance to see another of his works, I jumped at it. This man is an incredible choreographer who really knows how to use his dancers and the stage. In both cases, the set design was essential to the work. And what an original idea - a dance based on a book by a neuroscientist who had a stroke - how's that for inspiration! That said, I am not a fan of words in dance and while I thought it actually worked here, the quote from the book just went on too long and in spite of Cherkaoui's choreography of the quote, it just became babble after a point. Cut about 5 minutes from that and I'd give this work 5 stars. Curiously, this was also the only part of the dance not to make use of the set design and that probably didn't help. That said, any time I have a chance to see one of his works, I will jump at it.
