    Simply excellent

by Karen on 2024-03-18Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

Every aspect of this performance was top notch, from the exquisite singing to the fantastic acting. The antics of the ensemble helped convey emotions in such a fun way. I also loved the costumes, props and set pieces. The real star was the music - glorious voices and a superb orchestra.

    I loved it

by anon on 2024-03-17Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

Very, very good. Not quite up to COC or NY Met quality, but certainly very, very good. I espec loved the orchestra -- the flautist was excellent and every other player was more than competent! The performers were a little patchy at times but, so what? I certainly enjoyed the performance. And it was lovely to see the Elgin Winter Garden theatre in use. It is one of Toronto's undiscovered treasures!!! I shall def go again!

UBC Opera - definitely worth it.

by ChemicalMuskrat on 2011-02-07Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

This opera company put on an enthusiastic, yet professional quality performance. They're brilliant, and you can see them for considerably less than a production by the Vancouver Opera.

Better than average for a weak Massenet

by DharmaDawg on 2011-02-07Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

Jules Massenet was pretty much the Andrew Lloyd Weber of his time, the late 19th century in Paris. His star has faded since those days, though, and less than a handful of his works are part of today's standard operatic repertoire. One can see why: although Cenrillon (Cinderella) is still perfomed, I find it musically weaker than the engaging Thais or romantic Werther, with a plot that is ridiculous even by operatic standards. Its best musical passages evoke the influence of Wagner, but overall it is a rather dull opera. That UBC Opera was able to make something of it was not too unusual given the surprisingly good quality of the cast. Saturday night featured Szadovsky and Chan-Kent in the two most glamorous roles, Cendrillon and the Fairy Godmother. I would have thought Cendrillon would be a light lyric soprano voice, but Szadovsky's rich mezzo was highly effective. Also loved Chan-Kent's coloratura passages. After the letdown of their previous Don Giovanni, I think UBC Opera has redeemed itself with this performance.

    a good effort

by zazu4u on 2011-02-05Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

It was better than a high school event and not even close to a professional level. The set and costumes were great. The venue was fantastic. We left half way through feeling the second half was dragging on. Having a female play the part of the prince took away considerably. The young man playing Cinderella's father was weak in his performance. Cinderella did steal the show with her outstanding vocals.
