About

COMMANDER CODY IN CONCERT:

In the early-'70s, Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen pioneered a unique rock sound that fused elements of country, Western swing, rockabilly, and even jump blues. Today Commander Cody keeps the band's zany legacy alive and kicking as a solo act, performing material from his nearly five decades as a songwriter and performer. In their heyday the band was known for their marathon live sets, and Commander Cody has kept the tradition intact, treating fans to career-spanning live shows that include boot-stomping renditions of favorites like "Hot Rod Lincoln" and "Lost in the Ozone".

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Commander Cody, aka George Frayne IV, formed Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen in Ann Arbor, MI in 1967. The band spent several years playing local shows before moving west to San Francisco where they landed a deal with Paramount Records. They made their album debut in 1971 with Lost in the Ozone, an eclectic effort that earned them their first -- and biggest -- hit, a Top 10 cover of the song "Hot Rod Lincoln". Shortly after the release they hit the road, outfitting an old bus with 12 bunks -- just enough to accommodate their lineup at the time -- and touring the country. A string of popular albums followed including Country Casanova (1973) and Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas (1974), which the band supported with more touring including a date at the Hollywood Bowl where they opened for the Grateful Dead. After a few more albums and a string of European dates, the band threw in the towel in 1977. Since then Commander Cody has continued to record and tour, keeping the band's legacy alive with his marathon performances and fun-loving onstage energy. In 2012 he released the album Live from the Island under the name Commander Cody and His Modern Day Airmen, a talented new lineup he continues to perform with on his unforgettable tours.

I have been a commander fan for 30 some odd years. I have seen many concerts but the first time for the Commander. I was fantastic. He is getting a little long in the tooth but heck, aren't we all? Great concert, great venue. BB Kings Blues bar in NYC.
