    Phenomenal

by MarkD on 2014-08-24Theatehaus - Stuttgart

An incredibly talented cast that left us wanting more…The mix of Flamenco and Argentine Tango worked exceptionally well.. Maria Serrano is a fire ball, with lightning speed footwork a very sensual presence and brilliantly controlled dance.

    a new experience!!!!

by hellohell on 2013-12-11MASEY HALL - TORONTO

The show keeps the storyline of the classic myth but also has updated it to nowadays. If you expect a classical flamenco show you will be great disappointed because it's basically an entertainment show that mixes several styles in a frantic pace. The performers were exceptional and has a very original proposal, is the kind of show that you love or hate, no middle ground.

    Bit of a disappointment……..

by Emwoerks on 2013-12-02Massey Hall - Toronto

While bringing the play to the current political platform was brilliant, the narrative was a bit lacking. Excellent performances from the singers and musicians.

Compañia Maria Serranois so full of energy and non stop dancing, singers were also very good. They received a well deserved standing "O" they then did another dance number in appreciation. Can't wait for them to come back to Toronto.

    An unexpectedly bad show!!!

    by Sandra83 on 2013-12-02Massey Hall - Toronto

Please don't be fooled by the picture, or the other, unrealistic, review of this show. This was an extremely amateur production of an "updated/contemporary" version of the famous Carmen. I was sooo excited to see this show as I love flamenco and the previous Carmen performances I've had the pleasure of seeing, and it was a poor poor representation of both. If I went into details, it would take me a while to describe everything that was wrong with this production, but just to make it clear to people why they shouldn't see this show, I'll name a few of the reasons. Carmen is played by the "star" of the show, 20-30 years past her prime, overweight, and very distastefully dressed Maria Serrano. The other female dancers are dressed in mini-skirts, which they had to keep pulling down, and which take away from any flamenco movement, making the dance look very unattractive, or are dressed as if going to a nightclub, which, believe it or not, is actually one of the scene locations. There are other members of the company who come on stage and dance in trackpants, I'm not kidding, to dance/techno music incorporated into the traditional flamenco music, and accompanied by disruptive screen images in the background of bank promotional banners, financial advisors, politicians, newsmakers, and a tarot card reader who looked like the devil. All in all, it was a cheesy, messy, distasteful, awful show! We didn't know whether to get upset, which we did at the beginning, or laugh, which we did by the end because we wanted to make the evening pleasant for us somehow. Anyways... avoid this show!!!

Fantastic and disappointing at the same time

by LivinginTO on 2013-12-02Massey Hall - Toronto

The dancers we're mezmerizing, the singers were enchanting and the musicians were very talented; yet I was seriously disappointed with the show. The directing was a complete failure! There were images being projected on the screen that were flashing and repeating in such a distracting way it made it close to impossible to focus on the performance. Many people including myself and my wife were not able to look at the stage at various points because the flashing images were hurting our eyes. The story line seemed incoherent (assuming there was one). The audience was not provided any detail of the storyline in the booklet. We were only provided a vague resemblance to the story of Carmen which the performance didn't follow. They seemed to try to portray some political message of sorts that completely fell flat. I cannot emphasize enough how distracting the projected images were. Overall there was a treasure of talent on stage that was completely wasted because of an incompetent director.
