    No Acacia, No Love

by MetalBanger on 2010-07-19Sound Academy - Toronto

First thing I do when I get to a show is go to the merch table. This time I was pumped to check out Acacia Strain merch and buy a t shirt. That was when the unthinkable happened, turns out Acacia got detained at the border. I do not find this out from a fellow fan, I find this out from the lead singer from Cancer Bats, a band who's only song worth head banging to was a cover of Beastie Boys: Sabotage. Then I had to suffer through blessthefall, who are identical to UnderOath, both musically and visually. I knew I stuck around for a reason because after blessthefall was BTBAM and boy did they make up for acacia not being there and blessthefall totally blowing. But no pain no gain and we had to sit through a set from the new found wussies: UnderOath, minus their original drummer. I remember when UnderOath used to make music that didn't all sound the same. This time they played almost all new material and it felt like a never-ending vortex of broken chords, sad attempts at heavy break downs and whiney singing parts without their whiney singing parts dude who used to play the drums. But then As I Lay Dying, after what felt like an hour of waiting between sets, came on and killed it. They opened with 94 hours and immediately got everyone with floor seats off of their feet. Then there was the circle pit which went literally wall-to-wall. Oh yeah and did I mention the WALL OF DEATH, that was also LITERALLY wall-to-wall. So all in all, the 2 out of 3 bands I came to see, put on an awesome show but somehow didn't make up for getting to hear JFC live for a third time. And then there is the new material like BTM FDR that would have erupted the building. All in all, good show, could have been great, but was still good.

As I Lay Dying know how to control a moshing pit

by Scottevil on 2010-07-18Sound Academy - Toronto

Excellent event....all the bands were great...Cancer Bats Hail Destroyer live was fantastic UnderOath rocked as always and pleased us with a new song ..Heavy The Acasia Strain didn't make it accross the boarder Oh Well ! War Of Ages I think have gained some new fans But saving the best for last and an extra long set was As I Lay Dying owning the stage and the crowd was at there control bringing on the biggest Circle pit i've seen in awhile and spliting the floor for a wall of death on Combine.. The new music on The Powerless Rise was exceptional live My ears a still ringing the squish pit was hot and fiesty. Loved every minute of this event

Definitely some ups and some downs

by xReverendx on 2010-07-18Sound Academy - Toronto

I was super excited for this show because of all the great acts that were playing. With groups such as As I Lay Dying, Between the Buried and Me, Architects, and Cancer Bats this looked like an absolutely must see. However some of the bands really did not live up to expectations. Bless the Fall just really does not seem to fit this bill, their style of music just does not match up with the other bands. They were really not well received by the crowd and they were just not that good at all. Underoath was also a pretty big disappointing. Without having Aaron in the band anymore it was pretty flat, and they could not achieve the level in their music that he used to bring. The crowd got really bored of Underoath and it was a pretty low point in the show. But the rest of the bands really did deliver, Cancer Bats were totally awesome and really did just an amazing job of pumping up the crowd. Between the Buried and Me was so sick and just their musicianship blew everyone away. As I Lay Dying was just as awesome as ever. They were totally amazing and people were just going crazy. They really ended the night so well and made people forget about the lack-luster Underoath performance before hand. All in all the show was really good, but with some lack of depth and underwhelming performance, it was just disappointing. But if you love these bands then they will not let you down and you will definitely have a good time.

    Epic

by Bmoorecool on 2010-07-18Sound Academy - Toronto

Interesting evening for sure. The bands, the crowd and the venue were fantastic. The only downside was I'm pretty sure the As I Lay Dying fans are the tallest people ever, and being a small female I had issues finding a clear view of the stage. Luckily they had tv's hooked up with better views of the action. Underoath was really nice to see again live, different however without Aaron. The new drummer was fantastic, however the basist could not hold his own against aarons vocals. They did have a back track playing and they played the harder songs where Aaron was not directly featured. Excited for the new album this fall and to see how they do with a different sound.
