What a great performance! Corinne sings with amazing dynamic control, excellent pitch, and soul. Some of her melodies are HARD to sing, not because of acrobatic runs, but because of difficult intervals and harmonic tension, but she nailed everything. This is particularly impressive because she DOESN’T have perfect pitch. She sings consistently in tune, but she is human and her pitch wavered slightly a couple of times. I applaud that because it means we are getting an artist with skill rather than help from genetics or (🤢) autotune.
Her songs are accessible, yet there us plenty to dive into for an analytical musician like me. The band was great, but special kudos go to her keyboard player who handled a Nord, Rhodes, foot pedals, and vocals seamlessly. It took me a few songs to realize that there was no bass player, and I thought there might have been backing tracks. Then I looked at the Nord and saw where the elaborate bass lines were coming, with the foot pedals being used for more simple but …booming..bass lines.
Corinne is not a jazz artist, but she brings a jazz sensibility to her music the way Sting, Paul Simon, and others do. It elevates the music beyond simple harmony without alienating those for whom jazz is too sophisticated. I’m an even bigger fan than I already was. She was also very genuine and graceful with not even a hint of diva/ prima dona attitude.
