A great evening with musical icons James, Sanborn and Gadd. But nobody mentioned the biggest surprise of the evening, bassist Stewart Collie. His intense musicality, amazing technique and, unlike many double bass players, his ability to project sound from his instrument so clearly one would think he was playing a Fender bass. Loved his playing! An otherwise memorable evenig was marred by the abject ventilation in the tent to the point that we thought that David Sanborn, who looks pretty frail anyway, was going to succumb to the heat and fall over! And the audience is made to suffer the heat too and there is really no reason for this. It must be no big deal at all to place fans at various points in the tent, without interfering with the music, to make it a tolerable experience.
As expected the Concert was amazing! First time in my life I saw David Sanborn life in concert!
The opportunity to see these legends in concert was a once in a lifetime experience. Though they are all in their late '60s and '70s they remain among the best musicians on the planet. Their musicianship was superb on a hot Tuesday night and the compositions were superb. That the Robi Botos trio opened the evening was also an excellent treat. Robi was also on his game and a wonderful seque to Bob James and David Sanborn. A thoroughly enjoyable night. The Jazz Festival organizers need to think of and fund a different main stage for these events. There are wonderful concert halls around Toronto that should be used to host these night time concerts including the Four Seasons Centre and Koerner Hall. The venue of the tent at Nathan Phillips just doesn't cut it. The site lines are lousy, the seating is uncomfortable and there are no clean toilets after City Hall closes at 8:30. My two cents.
I am a fan of Bob James from Fourplay Jazz and have heard David Sanborn many times but never seen him in person. What an absolute treat this was!!! The talent of these two performers goes beyond amazing. Im glad that after 25 years they have finally gotten back together. We the audience are the beneficiaries and they truly enjoy what they do. So happy you came to Toronto!!!
The Robi Botos Trio opening act, Bob James, David Sanborn & Gadd was fantastic. But I have to say that I could not get a chair for myself and had to sit on the step instead. Also the sound was not that good as the Yamaha piano was too loud at certain times, My favorite drummer Steve Gadd was not visible at all from anywhere in the tent. I have been to many jazz festivals in Europe and this was my first in Toronto. I wish Toronto can do much better than this in the future.
