DE LA SOUL IN CONCERT:

Alternative hip hop pioneers De La Soul are back with a vengeance in 2014, celebrating the anniversary of their seminal 1989 debut album 3 Feet High and Rising with the 25 Years of De La Soul Tour. Classic sample-based jams like "The Magic Number" and  "Me Myself and I" will be front and center as the band takes the stage in their signature throwback streetwear for career-spanning sets of their beloved hits. With a new album titled You're Welcome also hitting shelves in 2014, fans can expect to catch some never-before-heard material sprinkled in among their favorites at the group's electrifying live shows.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Kelvin Mercer, David Jude Jolicoeur, and Vincent Mason formed De La Soul in 1987 while attending high school on Long Island. Their playful, inventive 1989 debut album 3 Feet High and Rising was a massive success, peaking at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and launching them to international fame overnight. The group's 1991 sophomore album De La Soul is Dead was another critical and commercial success, criticizing the increasingly violent nature of rap culture while still remaining upbeat with hits like "Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)" and "A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'". A string of acclaimed albums followed throughout the '90s and '00s, bringing the band out on the road for numerous electrifying tours with acts like Modest Mouse and A Tribe Called Quest. Back in 2014 with You're Welcome -- their first studio album in ten years -- De La Soul has fans chomping at the bit to catch the new material live on their 25th anniversary tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"De La Soul put on a wonderful show, I felt like I was in a dream. The hype before the show was even exciting, people were taking things back to the old school by break dancing."

"De La brought it back to the times when hip hop was fun! Lots of energy, lots of classics! I Love De La Soul!! Awesome show!"

"De La Soul put on an incredible show and there was so much energy. Thanks to them for 20+ years of amazing music."

    History Making

by Dougggg on 2009-08-28The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

De La Soul have been producing and loving Hip Hop music since they were teenagers over 20 years ago. To see them in concert, is more than seeing an amazing show, it also feels, and felt, like witnessing an evolution of the continuing legitimization of Hip Hop music and its importance as a means of expression through beat. They exuded their artistry through their music as well articulating the importance of their genre as means of activism for all to celebrate. Their show at the Phoenix on August 23rd, 2009, was a mix of classic songs spanning their entire careers, as well as none stop give and take from the Plugs and their fans. They know how to work a crowd, and wouldn't begin until we were feeling them. They made me love Hip Hop music. Please continue coming to Toronto De La!

    Fun show but short

by kapnkrunch on 2009-08-24The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

I've been a fan of De La Soul since a friend gave me their first album on cassette back in high-school. Fate has conspired against me seeing these guys in the past but I was glad to be able to see them at The Phoenix which is my favourite concert venue in Toronto. I was upstairs on a couch for the opening acts and, to be honest, didn't pay much attention to them but I have to say that DJ Dopey from Notes To Self was a great performer. De La Soul took to the stage at 11PM. Maseo suddenly sprang up from behind the elevated turntables like a puppet with a big smile on his face and it cracked me up. Pos came out next and then Dave within a minute or two. Without getting into specifics, what I liked about this show was that you had a hip-hop trio that has been together for 20 years without hiatus (something very few hip-hop acts can attest to which De La mentioned themselves) putting on a show where they appeared to be genuinely enjoying what they were doing and interacting with the crowd throughout the show. They definitely haven't lost their sense of humour and joked with the crowd frequently. Dave's impression of a marble-mouthed James Brown was particularly funny. The show was a lot of fun and had good crowd energy. Despite how much fun it was, I only gave this show three stars because it was very short. There was a digital clock on stage visible from where I was standing and they came on at 11:03 and finished their main set at 11:53 which felt very short. They came back and did about 15 minutes of encore material but the whole show clocked in at well under 90 minutes. I had to roll my eyes a little because they said something to the effect of "we're here to party all night long" near the beginning of the show. The versions of the songs they did weren't carbon copies of the studio versions and had fun little crowd involvement bits worked in but they were short and based on some of the little "tricks" they pulled was likely tightly rehearsed. For example, there was one portion of a song when the volume level went down sharply and the guys pantomimed turning down a volume control while Maseo was miles from the turntables rapping with a mic. I knew this kind of thing was coming when the first thing I saw Maseo set up was a Macbook. I don't want to sound too negative, though. This was a fun show and I don't want to give the impression that the show was "phoned in" because it wasn't. The guys were obviously working hard and doing a lot to engage the crowd. I just thought it was too short.

    My Buddy

by Kimlick on 2009-08-24The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

The house was packed, the energy was electric while we anxiously awaited the soul train to roll in. As the familiar back beat started pulsing and the crowd started bumping I knew they were actually here. It was no longer "Me Myself and I" it was all of us in the Tribe. There was my old girl Jenny I found her Penny and a Daisy hat wearing Crocodile. A drink in my hand, beautiful ladies I was stayin for a while. My skinny Buddy not to chubby, he made 3 the magic number, we danced all night with the De La Soul it was this spell they had us under. So if you missed they show and you stayed at home all lonely in your bed just remember the water will engulf you if you do not care to tread. Great Jam Come back soon now.
