About

DESTROYER IN CONCERT:

Canadian indie rock innovators Destroyer are masters of reinvention, treating fans to new worlds of sonic and emotional territory with each successive album. On 2013's Five Spanish Songs EP, frontman Dan Bejar explored his Latin heritage with five Spanish-language pop songs, but fans at the band's eclectic live shows are just as likely to dance to kaleidoscopic disco tracks like "A Savage Night at the Opera" as they are to hear "Maria de las Nieves". A charismatic showman known for his soft croon and poetic lyrics, Bejar always cooks up a truly memorable experience on the band's must-see tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Destroyer began in Vancouver in the mid-'90s as the bedroom recording project of Dan Bejar. After releasing a lo-fi debut album in 1996 titled We'll Build Them a Golden Bridge, Bejar teamed up with producer John Collins for his first proper studio album, 1998's City of Daughters. Over the course of several more albums Bejar continually reinvented the project's sound, adding a full backing band for 2000's grandiose, polished Thief before switching to a raw rock sound for 2002's This Night. A string of diverse albums followed throughout the '00s, paving the way for Destroyer's critically acclaimed 2011 album Kaputt, a masterpiece that landed on numerous best-of lists and was named the year's second best album by Pitchfork. A magnetic and engaging performer, Bejar continues to dazzle ticket buyers on Destroyer's unforgettable tours.

The perfect venue for this artist!

by Baragana on 2023-11-13Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Some artists are better appreciated in a smaller venue, the end result is a more intimate experience. Destroyer at the Commodore was a great event. Staff there friendly and helpful. Thanks!

    Great show!

by Long-time fan on 2023-11-12Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

I hadn't seen a solo Destroyer show since Dan opened for Neko Case at the Vogue. Good floor seat arrangement at the Commodore. Set list had lots of deep cuts, which you wouldn't hear with the full band, so this was a special bonus. Nice to see Dan play guitar again. Dave Carswell's guitar was a bonus as well. Opener Frog Eyes were also a hometown crowdpleaser.

    Destroyer at their best!

by Leon1371 on 2015-10-06The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

I seen Destroyer in smaller venues like Lee's palace before and they were incredible there. But it seems to me like they also benefit from a bigger venue as the Danforth Music Hall. There is a bigger and crisper orchestral sound than the smaller venues. Al in all they were fantastic and the crowd love them as they deserve it.

    Favourite concert of 2011!

by artofalmost on 2012-02-07Lee's Palace - Toronto

I'm surprised by the negative reviews. We saw Destroyer at Lee's Palace and the concert was terrific! The tracks from Kaputt were amazing - live was so much better than the album. Looking forward to seeing Destroyer again at the TD Jazz Festival!

I'll keep this to the point. True, Dan Bejar doesn't address the crowd very often. True, he frequently indulges in alcoholic beverages. And true, he holds a lyric sheet for a couple songs. But it didn't detract from the performance. His delivery remained solid throughout, and the band was very tight. The mood of the show was very consistent with the sound of the Kaputt album, that is to say very mellow but I think it captured this phase of Destroyer perfectly. The setlist consisted mostly of Kaputt tracks but also included a handful of the most popular tracks from prior releases, which were given the smooth '80's makeover. Expect the setlist not to vary a whole lot night to night. Enjoyable show overall.

    Not enjoyable!!

by MolsonC on 2011-04-15West End Cultural Centre - Winnipeg

First time seeing Destroyer live and was not impressed.I have a few of his cd's, including the new one, and enjoy them imensily The sound seemed muddled, and a little too loud. Had trouble making out the lyrics. Bejar seemed none too enthusiastic, what with the constant crouching on stage, then turning his back to the audiance to play his tambourine. Had great seats, left before the encore with a headache. Would NOT see him again.

    Destroyer-meh, opening acts-AWFUL

by kkreview on 2011-03-19Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Destroyer lost a lot of credibility with me after having such awful opening acts! Two bands, highly forgettable, both seemed to take stage longer than Destroyer. When the main act came, the musicains seemed at a loss for control & what could have beautiful high points, were drowned out. Plus, Destroyer reading lyrics off a sheet of paper & barely-there vocals were a disappointment.
