Detroit Pistons History

One of the most storied franchises in NBA history, the Pistons moved to Detroit in 1957 from Fort Wayne, Indiana, where they were owned by Fred Zollner and known as the Fort Wayne (Zollner) Pistons. The Pistons played at Olympia Stadium for four years, then moved to Cobo Arena. In 1974, Bill Davidson purchased the team, and in 1978, the team began playing at the Pontiac Silverdome.

Prior to the start of the 1988–89 season, the Pistons moved to play at The Palace of Auburn Hills and won back-to-back NBA Championships in 1989 and 1990 with the "Bad Boys" teams. Detroit's "Goin' to Work" squad picked up the franchise's third NBA Championship in 2004 in the midst of making six consecutive trips to the Eastern Conference Finals.

In addition to the numerous team accomplishments, the Pistons also have had a list of great players and coaches who have contributed to the team's long history of success. Detroit has retired jersey numbers for Chuck Daly (2), Isiah Thomas (11), Joe Dumars (4), Dave Bing (21), Bob Lanier (16), Dennis Rodman (10), Vinnie Johnson (15), Bill Laimbeer (40), Ben Wallace (3), Chauncey Billups (1) and Richard Hamilton (32). Daly, Thomas, Dumars, Bing, Lanier, Rodman and Davidson all have been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

    Brand New Arena!!!

by iamfob on 2018-01-31Little Caesars Arena - Detroit

I attended the Detroit Pistons vs. OKC Thunder game. It was my first time at the Little Caesars Arena and the arena is truly beautiful. The big jumbrotron was clear and can be seen from any where inside the arena. The sound system was loud and clear. There were so many different foods and drinks option at the stand. I highly recommended visiting the arena.

    1st game

by ubear on 2013-01-04The Palace of Auburn Hills - Auburn Hills

Having never been to a NBA basketball game, we didn't know what to expect. It was a busy electrifying experience. It wasn't long to get into the game and cheering with the veteran fans. Always something happening, whether it was the cheerleaders, acrobatic team, drums, or up coming junior stars, it was great entertainment. I am a hockey buff myself and this was my winter classic replacement. I may go here instead next year where it is warm and cushy. The 5 star restaurant was 5 star +. Food, service, wine selection and price was excellent! Even the $10.00 parking fee was modest. There was minimal traffic congestion leaving the facility also.

You'd think that Miami should be able to beat Detroit even without Wade? But no. Great job Pistons.

    Detroit Basketball!!!!!!!!!!!! Great Game Pistons

by SweetHoney85 on 2012-04-24The Palace of Auburn Hills - Auburn Hills

Considering this was my first NBA game, I was so excited to have seen the Pistons win! The Palace was pretty easy to get to and the atmosphere was fun! The only disadvantage I would have to say is that the majority of seats around us were really compact and since I took my husband for his birthday to the game, we were kind of disappointed because he's got long legs and had a hard time getting up and sitting in our seats. Next time we will have to try closer seats. I would have never in a million years thought i'd get to see MC Hammer in person, and was so happy we got that opportunity Sunday night. Also was surprised of the "Faith and Fellowship" event that they held after the game. We stayed to attend and was definitely well worth it! Just got tickets to see the Pistons again on Thursday night! Can't wait!!!!!!!
