Edmonton Oilers History

The origin of the Oilers goes back to 1972, when they were one of the founding franchises of the World Hockey Association. Once the league folded in 1979, they were one of four teams absorbed into the National Hockey League. It didn't take long for them to establish dominance in the league, reeling off five Stanley Cup Championships in seven years. They are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the most championships since the NHL-WHA merger.

The Oilers of the '80s were a phenomenal dynasty with a roster that reads like the Hockey Hall of Fame: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, plus a stellar supporting cast. Gretzky scored 92 goals in 1982, breaking Phil Esposito’s record for number of goals in a single season. He also recorded a record 215 points in 1985. During his time with the Oilers as centre and team captain, Gretzky led the team to four Stanley Cup championships (1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988). By the time Gretzky finished his time with the Oilers, he held or shared a total of 49 NHL records.

In all, the Edmonton Oilers have appeared in the Stanley Cup Final seven times.

Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place

NHL superstar Connor McDavid and NHL legends Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier opened the doors to the spectacular Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton in October 2016. McDavid and his Edmonton Oilers bring excitement to Rogers Place nightly, with the statue of The Great One standing guard just outside. The state-of-the-art Rogers Place replaced the aging Rexall Place, and resulted in an explosion of business and residential growth in downtown's ICE District.

    Good stuff!

by Capper on 2024-03-16Rogers Place - Edmonton

First NHL game for the two of us! Great venue (Edmonton) that had us grinning from ear to ear just to show that we were rookies! The process seemed a little daunting being the first time, but with the explanation from the online urging, things went off without a hitch right from choosing seats, payment, timely reminders of the event right up to entry. Like I said... good stuff!

    Rogers is a Fabulous Facility

by Impressive on 2024-03-06Rogers Place - Edmonton

We are out of province visitors. Rogers IA an absolutely fabulous facility. We stayed at the Sandman Signature Hotel, which was connected via walkways to Rogers Place. The whole downtown sports arena is well thought out.

    3rd period Conner show..

by Jef on 2024-02-24Rogers Place - Edmonton

It was a great game for Oiler fans. It was against Detroit. First game I've seen with Conner playing. Only get to a game once in awhile. The only thing we didn't like was our seats were very uncomfortable. We were up very high. Could see well but seats are too small. Making seats too close together.

    Oiler Game - Sportsnet Lounge

by Gust on 2024-01-09Rogers Place - Edmonton

If you are ok being seated a little higher up the Sportsnet lounge is worth every cent. All food inside is included (our game was chicken tacos, fish and chips, prime rib and all the fixings. Then there is Hotdogs, popcorn and other finger food well. Oh save room as after the 2nd period dessert comes out). Besides the food there are 2 bars (non alcoholic beverages are free) with a nice variety and lines are super short. Oh don't forget if you want to stay in your seat a server will bring you drinks. Then the room has its own bathroom so no long lines. My 14 year old son and I had a great experience in the lounge and would recommend it to anyone. Oh the game ends you are not rushed out and can stay for a drink if you so desire. Hopefully we can get lounge seats again.
