Rating: 5 out of 5 Fidelio: A Welcome Change
by freefall on 2012-04-25Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonThe opera was very well done in terms of the sets and the performances. The sets gave you a feel of prison environment and the performances, particularly of the opera star playing Fidelio, were par excellence. Another reason I truly enjoyed this opera was because it wasn't about over-the-top romance, betrayal and tragedy. Instead it was about how a wife helps her husband get out of a prison. After watching the mini-operas Cavelleria Rusticana/I Pagliacci I had thought to not watch any more operas, and I was willing to sell my ticket for Fidelio which I had purchased in summer 2011. But after watching Fidelio I look forward to watching operas with different themes. Great job!
Rating: 4 out of 5 Fidelio impressed a First Timer
by SBARR on 2012-04-23Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonThe opera singers were very talented. For being my first time to an Opera I was very impressed with the whole atmoshere. The orcastra was very talented and the sound quality was amazing. The story was well played out and I think the Edmontom Opera did a great job.
Rating: 3 out of 5 A difficult opera, the team pulled it off!
by terd on 2012-04-23Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonBeethovens only opera, sorry to say is difficult! It's not very deep and does not present opportunity for artistic/emotional direction. I wouldn't recommend this opera to a newcomer, it has no bells & whistles, that's why I rated it at 3 stars. Having said that, the Edmonton Opera team did pull it off and the orchestra was amazing! Well done!
Rating: 3 out of 5 Not what I expected
by SharStar on 2012-02-14Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonI enjoyed the Opera overall, However based on how it was advertised I was expecting something different entirely. I thought it would be a very formal, traditional Japanese Opera, not the borderline slap stick that it was. As a result of anticipating a different experience, I was disappointed.
