About

EELS IN CONCERT:

With their highly anticipated 11th studio album hitting shelves in 2014, Eels continue to carry the torch for funny yet emotional alternative rock. Packed with clever wordplay and eloquent observations about the comedy of life, songs like "Novocaine for the Soul" and "Your Lucky Day in Hell" garnered the band a serious cult following in the '90s, and nearly 20 years later they've lost none of their incisive wit. True to form, Eels' 2013 shows featured several encore fake outs that saw them repeatedly return to the stage after the crew had begun to breakdown, with all signs pointing to more shenanigans on their 2014 world tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed by singer-songwriter Mark Oliver Everett, a.k.a. "E," in 1995, Eels' 1996 debut album Beautiful Freak was a surprise hit, making its way on to the Billboard 200 with catchy alt-rock singles like "Novocaine for the Soul" and "Susan's House." The band's overnight success landed them on tour with the likes of Pulp and Fiona Apple, paving the way for a string of acclaimed albums in the '00s. Following the 2013 release of their tenth studio album Wonderful, Glorious,  the band surprised fans with the announcement of another new album in 2014, coinciding with a summer world tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Eels rocked Webster Hall. Great guitars and drums. amazing sound and lights. And E is always a blast! Fun show all around. These guys never disappoint."

"Great show, the band is really tight. E is dedicated to putting on a great show. They did a big encore at the end that was amazing."

"The Eels never disappoint. They always add a unique spin on their music and presentation"

Always a pleasure, but this time was special

by Hinchy on 2014-05-30Winter Garden Theatre - Toronto

Such a wonderful setting for an intimate Eels concert. Mr E was on great form, and had some very funny interactions with the audience, including a time when he went and hugged audience members who were on the ground floor. But they mostly just played music, and they did that superbly. The Chet as always was fantastic, and PeeBoo did a great job with the trumpet, but the stand-up bass was a highlight. A good mix of old and new songs, mostly down-tempo, but a fabulous time.

An Eels concert that'll touch your heart

by OBlade on 2014-05-30Winter Garden Theatre - Toronto

This was my first Eels concert. I've wanted to see them for years, and it's finally worked out. The biggest disappointment of the night? The theatre wasn't full. More people need to know about the Eels, and go watch them live. They're a real band with real music and genuine emotion, and this concert was a truly exceptional experience. With so many albums to draw from, the Eels picked one or two from each album, and they picked the right ones. Together with several songs off their excellent new album, Cautionary Tales, the concert had an overall emotional arc, going from 'bummer songs' as E called them to a positive outlook on ilfe. It's almost an emotional journey that's really touching. Several new songs, like 'Where I'm From', 'Where I'm Going' and 'Mistakes of My Youth', just resonated with me, and I'm sure many would agree. Old classics were touching too. 'It's a Motherf%$^er' was brilliantly done, as were 'My Beloved Monster' and 'Last Stop This Town'. And a few songs outright rocked, including 'Fresh Feeling' and 'I Like Birds'. Great setlist, outstandingly played. The Eels are a unit that plays smoothly. Yes, E's at the forefront and it's all about him, but the Chet, Al, Peeboo, and Knuckles (who all have ridiculously great stage names) know where it's at and play so well off each other, each playing several instruments (often within one song), and it's all seamless and it all works. It works well. It's good music played by professionals. If you're a fan and you've listening to E's albums, or read his book, then you'll feel like you know him pretty well. And even though E pointed out he doesn't really know us, it doesn't matter. But when he walked off the stage into the crowd hugging people right after saying that... it just shows that he cares about us fans, and about making music, and connecting to people. It's a genuine show, and it touches the heart, and I'm still blown away several days later. Don't miss the Eels. They're worth it, absolutely. Tell your friends, tell you parents, tell everyone. And tell the people behind me to shut the hell up, they were talking throughout the show... rude!

    Eels rocks and rolls.

by Singtao on 2013-02-27The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

Eels at the pheonix on Monday feb 25/13 Not the first time I've seen E and the boys. Different band set up from the last show at Lee's Palace. No horn section this time. I missed them. Five piece band. E on guitar and maracas and rain stick. Two other guitars bass and a drum set up stage right Close to the audience. This configuration probably sounds great in the lead singer riser. Lots of hugging. Two encores. It was cool. Band was tight. Played everything double tempo as usual. Played lots off the new disc which is great but it's only been out a couple weeks so I don't think the crowd could all sing along. I'm sure they sold a few copies at the merch table. The opening act(s). Guy smoking bong playing bad air guitar for 10 minutes. Threw a plastic alien into the crowd. Performance piece that could use some work. Or more pot. The next was a delightful young woman who's name escapes me now. I do remember her tours hashtag though. #10000leaguesundermynutsack She had some pipes. Kinda reminded me of Neko Case. Think ill track her down. Go to Eels. You'll enjoy.

The Eels blew my mind. E played with many amazing people and brought a number of instruments to the stage, playing great music. At first I was a little fazed that the live stuff was a different rendition of his albums, but they were all passionate and I was glad that I got to listen to something a little different than something I could just pop into my stereo. The venue was intimate and really allowed the band to play for the audience. It was truly fantastic. The opening act, The Submarines, are also great with melody and lyrics.

EELS @ LEES: outstanding as usual

    by melis84 on 2011-08-04Lee's Palace - Toronto

Eels always puts on a fantastic show. This was my first time at Lee's Palace and I gotta say Mod Club is the better venue and slightly more intimate with the stage lower than Lee's. Eels never disappoint - their beards, outfits, instruments, and plain old musical genius make the whole show shine. The Submarines opened for Eels and they were great, even as a 2-piece without their usual drums & bass. I had never seen them live and they put on a really great show, albeit short!

    Eels: Sooo Gooood!

by Stythe on 2010-10-05Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

The doors opened at 8pm and there were two opening acts; the Eels didn't start playing until just after 10pm. Doesn't matter, E and the band pretty much shat on every expectation I had and blew me away. The was hands down, one of the most enjoyable concert experiences I've ever had. The venue was large enough to fit a good number of people but small enough to feel intimate; it makes a huge difference. The music was mostly a collection of songs from the last three albums though some older hits were played; all of them changed significantly from what they intially sounded like for this live show. I'm definitely going again next time Eels come to town. E knows how to have a good time while showing his audience one, and he's a damn fine performer.

    Eels amaze as usual

by melis84 on 2010-10-01Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

My favourite band of all time. This is the 3rd time we have seen them in Toronto, 2nd time at the Mod Club. The Mod Club is the ideal venue to see them play at, love it! We were front row centre enjoying every moment. They never disappoint! They played Jungle Telegraph live for the first time I've heard and it was INCREDIBLE. Can't wait til they come back next time.
