About

ELVIS COSTELLO IN CONCERT:

He may be the "other Elvis," but when it comes to clever, madcap,  personality-drenched rock and roll, there is only one Elvis Costello. From his days in the British punk and new wave scene to his pioneering role in the rise of power pop, Costello has repeatedly broken the mold, appealing to both cult and mainstream audiences. On tour as a one-man-band in  2013, he displayed serious performance chops, making a backing band seem obsolete with beautifully stripped-down versions of classics like "Allison" and "What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding." Hitting the road again in 2014, Costello will be treating fans to his acclaimed solo show as well as select dates with his band the Imposters.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

London-born Declan Patrick MacManus, better known as Elvis Costello, began playing music at an early age under the influence of his father, a talented musician and bandleader. After playing in a pub rock band in his early twenties, he released his solo debut album My Aim is True in 1977 to moderate success, landing in the Top 20 in the UK and Top 40 in the US. Shortly after forming his backing band the Attractions, Costello  released his breakthrough 1979 album Armed Forces, a No. 2 hit in the UK and an enduring new wave classic. In addition to his knack for catchy, clever songwriting, Costello's provocative performances, pointed political lyrics, and anti-authority attitude helped fuel his success. With more than 30 studio albums under his belt, Costello's impressive run continues with another highly anticipated tour in 2014.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Simply an amazing show. So many great songs, and the man just doesn't stop! A great experience!"

"It's amazing that all of the talent on display was coming from one man. He played for nearly two and a half hours and not a second was wasted. Performers like him are a rarity."

"Quirky, eclectic and utterly entertaining. Elvis' voice is as distinctive as ever, and while he played many of his classics, the set list included many songs that were throwbacks to his father's time. I have a whole new appreciation for the man's guitar talents."

    not a fan

by holmes22 on 2016-12-13Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Although not fans, we had open minds. However... The tickets were overpriced for a one person show. The long speech by Martha Hart spoiled the vibe; an opening act would have been more welcome.Elvis suffered from a poor sound system, he was mainly singing flat, as his vocals were set too loud and he couldn't hear his guitars. The harsh vocal vibrato he uses is really irritating, and the way he garbles his words makes it next to impossible to decipher them. He tends to bang on the guitar and piano and often ends in a harsh chord. The talks he gave between songs was basically boring filler. This show would be more suited to an open mic setting. Not impressed. \

    Elvis Outdoes Himself

by tomfromcalgary on 2016-12-13Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Elvis Costello gave a warm, intimate performance, entrancing with his solo reworking of his catalogue, and his many vignettes of his own life and musicians he's worked with.

    Elvis Rocks the Jube

by UNCLEROCKIT on 2016-12-13Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Knowing Elvis love and expertise in all the visual arts (photography, painting, video) I should have expected a show. But this was much more than singer/songwriter plucking a guitar and crooning his hits. Intimately told stories of his life on the road, his likes his fears (hates to fly) segued the songs. I connect more with the older hits: My Aim is True, Watching the Detectives but each song was presented with a unique and stylish accompaniment. These pared-down productions captured both the essence of the initial release and the immediacy of a solo performance. Exciting, engaging, a bit of the old and a bit of the new. His voice has enough power to step away from the mikes and amps to sing directly to the audience. Big ticket price, worth every penny and more.

    Elivis is the King!

by JWilly on 2016-12-13Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

For more than 40 years I have been in love with this man - his music, his voice, his commitment to excellence. Excellence is what we got from this solo performance - often bringing tears while at the same time shaking my head with the wondrance of his repertoire.

    Underwhelmed

by jamesosterberg on 2016-12-13Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I hate to say anything negative about Elvis. He interacts with the crowd, is charming as heck and obviously talented. However, this acoustic one man show lacked that frenetic energy of his younger days. It was one song after another that sounded the same and trying to understand the lyrics proved difficult. Of course it may just have been that I was expecting something different and should stop living in the past.

    Where were the oldies?

by Btrade on 2016-12-13Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Way too many new songs, and definitely not enough of the old. Also, sound difficulties at the beginning destroyed the delivery of the first three songs. Having said that, he was very entertaining with great story telling and of course it is all for a good cause.

    Loved this show!

by Munsi on 2016-12-11Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

A warm and incredibly intimate performance from an iconic voice in popular music, drawing from every era of his career and including several (very enjoyable) new tunes he's working on. I loved this concert, I've been a fan since I was eleven years old, and I'm glad to've had the opportunity to see him play!
