We have enjoyed Esperanza Spalding's music over the years, but wouldn't consider ourselves huge followers of her music. The concert seemed like an interesting way to expand our musical horizons, but unfortunately, it was not a good experience. She clearly has a tremendous amount of musical talent (as does her back up musicians), but the concert seemed like more of a show for the musicians themselves, not the audience. Playing even one piece that was recognizable would have been nice, or even a few bars that could be strung together. The concert was an exploration of jazz experimentation, not remotely mainstream. Fair enough, some may have expected that, others did not (and left the show early). The audience was barely lukewarm compared to other recent shows at the NCA. Finally she only played for barely an hour and when it was over, I seriously thought it was the intermission. Very disappointed. That being said, the NCA orchestra was excellent!
