FLYING LOTUS IN CONCERT:

Genre-spanning producer and rapper Flying Lotus has quickly become one of the most influential and innovative producers in experimental hip hop. His spacious, trippy productions take on new dimensions at his mesmerizing live shows, where an extensive setup of software and hardware instruments provides him with an arsenal of mind-expanding sounds to manipulate. On tour in 2014 in support of his fifth album You're Dead!, Flying Lotus will treat ticket buyers to new cuts from the release alongside classic fan favorites like "Massage Situation" and "Tea Leaf Dancers".

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Los Angeles-born Flying Lotus, a.k.a. Steven Ellison, hails from a long line of musicians -- his great aunt and uncle were jazz legends Alice and John Coltrane. He made his debut in 2006 with the album 1983, impressing critics with his unique IDM-meets-hip hop sound and attracting the attention of label execs at Warp Records, who signed him the following year. His popularity continued to grow with his 2008 sophomore album Los Angeles, and in 2010 he cracked the Top 20 of the independent charts with his third album Cosmogramma. By the time he began work on his fourth album Until the Quiet Comes, his reputation as a producer had attracted big-name collaborators like Thom Yorke and Erykah Badatu. Th album was a huge critical and commercial success, topping year-end lists and earning him crossover success with a Top 40 spot on the Billboard 200. Flying Lotus thrilled fans in summer of 2014 with the announcement of his fifth album You're Dead, which he'll accompany with a highly anticipated US tour.

    Sensory overload of epic proportions

This was, hands down, the best show I’ve ever seen in my life. I have never seen anything like it. I’d give it 6 stars if I could.

Go for the amazing Little Dragon show.

Little Dragon = amazing, every time. Have seen them live a few times now (4). As for Flying Lotus, I had never heard his music before and thought maybe he could turn me into a fan on that night, but he encountered technical difficulties, so the '3D light show' didn't happen for us. The verdict, I am still not a fan. His music didn't interest me, and I doubt a 3D light show would have changed that...

Spectacular show; a complete feast for the senses. Openers were cool (though pbdy was a tad aggressive for us). In a brutally impatient move for everyone, The Danforth cut FlyLo at 11 sharp just at his climax. Not cool..

    potential turns meh

by bliz82 on 2014-10-24The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Opener thundercat was amazing jazz rock fusion stuff. Thundercat playing bass was pretty sweet with his band and later with flying lotus. And the huge cube with visuals and flying lotus' weird glowing eyes mask was sick. However, although there were great parts musically, flying lotus was over mixing levels and drowning his sound of great tunes. He used high pitched rap over top good tracks. Other times he was just pressing play and not really doing anything except rising volume and bass controls. Then he came out to rap and sucked so bad. He pressed play for a track he rapped over. Like some little kid in his room rapping over a beat playing on cd. Then he had the audacity to insult toronto just cuz the crowd wasnt digging his crap. He should stick to djing and visuals. And he seems to be getting lazy and redundant compared to last few times ive seen him live. He also seems cockier and postering which just comes across as sad.

Worth travelling thousands of miles for.

by Sprocketcity on 2010-09-07The Opera House - Toronto

This was a fantastic show. Openers mymanhenri & ultragamma took dueling laptops into the stratosphere, showcasing prime hip-hop and dubstep. These guys were a real treat live & I hope they come to Winnipeg some day. As for Flying Lotus: simply incredible the way he mixed and mashed his tunes with a ton of electronic favorites. His energy and enthusiasm was incredible and everyone had a great time dancing into the wee hours.
