GEORGE BENSON IN CONCERT:

George Benson brings his gifted guitar playing and sonorous voice to every stage he graces, consistently impressing fans at his live performances with his soulful and swinging jazz sound. In concert Benson unleashes a furious flurry of melodic guitar mastery on supercharged renditions of standards like “Take Five”, “On Broadway”, and the perennial favorite “This Masquerade”. He’s also a skilled band leader, hanging back with his infectious smile as he lets the talented members of his top-notch ensemble execute moving, eloquent solos. Ticket buyers can expect a jaw-dropping display of six-string showmanship every time George Benson brings his funky and fluid fretwork on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Pittsburgh-born George Benson was a child prodigy who had already cut his first single by the age of ten. He spent the remainder of his adolescence training under organist Jack McDuff before making his debut as a bandleader with the 1964 album The New Boss Guitar of George Benson. He continued to climb the ranks of the jazz world, even appearing on the track “Paraphernalia” from Miles Davis’ 1968 album Miles in the Sky. The virtuosic Benson scored a huge crossover hit in 1976 when he pulled double-duty on vocals and guitar for “This Masquerade”, which took home the Grammy for Record of the Year. With the encouragement of Quincy Jones, Benson explored vocals during the ‘70s and ‘80s, leading to the most commercially successful period of his career. He returned to his instrumental jazz roots at the dawn of the ‘90s and toured with renowned contemporaries like Chet Atkins and Al Jarreau into the new millennium. Ten Grammys and countless breathtaking solos later, George Benson still gives audience members an unparalleled listening experience with his amazing instrumental prowess and undeniable grooves.

George Benson is a class-A act and it showed. His storytelling through music and brief audience engagement lets it be known he's been in the game for a while but still enjoys every second of it. A must see for jazz fans of all ages!

    GEORGE BENSON

    by CONCERT GOER on 2023-07-02

IT'S TIME TO PARK IT GEORGE, WHILE WE REALISE HE IS 80 YRS. OLD, IT SHOULD NOT BE ABOUT THE MONEY. AN I HR. AND APPROX. 15 MINS. WITH ENCORE IS NOT THE NORM THESE DAYS. THE BAND AND BACKUP SINGER WERE TERRIFIC AND THEY HELPED CARRY HIM. WHILE WE WERE WARNED ABOUT THE AIR EARLIER IN THE DAY, THE THEATER WAS HOT HOT HOT. HOPE TORONTO JAZZ FESTIVAL FINDS SOMEONE YOUNGER NEXT YEAR TO HEADLINE THEIR CONCERT. SMOKEY ROBINSON WAS NOT TOO BAD LAST YEAR, HE STILL HAD THE "MOVES"AND THE LADIES STILL LOVED HIM.

    Everyone sounded GREAT

    by Kevvie_G on 2023-07-01

George Benson is 80 years old. Now that we have that out of the way, he sounds amazing. None of the vocal keys were dropped and his falsetto is spot on. His guitar playing is more sparse than in his younger days, but it's still 100% Benson - tasty and in the pocket. His comping behind other soloists really showcased his jazz credentials. Sadly (at least for me), the setlist did not represent Mr. Benson's versatility. The only instrumental was "Breezin", which is "jazzy". I enjoyed all of the music, and every band member was spectacular, but given that Benson has returned to his straight-ahead roots over the decades, I had hoped to hear at least some of that represented in the setlist. Do we REALLY need to hear "The Greatest love of all"or "Nothing's Going to Change My Love For You", regardless of how well he performed them?? I had never seen Benson and I'm glad I went, but I wish I had heard more jazz at a jazz festival.

Always great to see this legend in action!

    by Mighty NK on 2023-06-30

I have seen George Benson perform for a long time. I was introduced to him through "Breezin'", and he has populated my playlists ever since. On this stop at the Toronto Jazz Festival, he was in good spirits in a wonderful venue (Massey Hall). George played familiar hits and some covers. He avoided some of the more challenging guitar work and some of the more challenging singing notes but at age 80, I'll give him a pass. He was terrific!

Jazz Legend George Benson can still sing/ play guitar

    by Charmin on 2023-06-30

Amazing performance by a jazz legend. Only downside was the air conditioning in the venue not working properly. He sang many of his favourites from Breezin to On Broadway. Hope to see him again!
