    Glamorous Evening

by Lamour99 on 2017-07-02National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Wonderful reception, entertaining awards show. Enjoyed dressing black tie and watching the fashion show of all attendees. Award winners were down to earth and very deserving of the GG award. A wonderful tribute to hardworking artists who give us so much joy!

Gala Great, Reception down from other years

by Anonymous on 2015-06-02National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The actual gala is always wonderful, and was again this year. The pre- and post- catering and reception, on the other hand, was not up to previous years standards. Many little problems in the pre-event catering (no serving utensils for some messy items, long lines for wine due to pouring backlogs or running out of glasses, ran out of napkins, etc). In the post-event, for the first time in decades the usual live band was not playing, but rather some guy with an electronic DJ outfit, which interested no-one. In previous years people stayed for hours listening to and dancing to the great band. This year, people had a glass of wine and a snack, and went home. We left the earliest we have left in 20 years, and the parking lot was already well emptied-out.

    Touching Dedications

by AniLC on 2015-06-02National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The gala was wonderful. The presentations and performances were top notch. All tributes were touching and very impressive. The only downside was outside of the show, in southam hall during the "cocktail hour", where the lineup for drinks (or even water!) was so long. Perhaps a few more stations set up would have helped. The line I stood in for almost 30 minutes actually ran out of glasses! When attending such an event, a person does not expect to have to spend all of the "mingle" time waiting in a line for a drink. There was no cash bar either, so even if you wanted to buy your own drink that was not an option. Thank goodness the food made up for it. What food I could manage to find was delicious, but unfortunately many people attending this event left their manners at home. I found many of the attendees quite "snobby" actually, when I made small talk with a few people all I got in return were blank stares & eye rolls. I've been to many similar events for performing arts and this crowd was the most unfriendly I've encountered yet. Unfortunate.

    An Enjoyable Evening

by 1ToughCritic on 2014-05-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We really enjoyed the entire evening. Nice opportunity to "mingle" pre-concert, too. It was a "mixed" program, as expected, which variety was welcome. We would recommend this event and would attend a similar, future, event.

    Prestigious event; top Canadian artists

by lefebvr1 on 2014-02-25National Arts Centre - Ottawa

I've attended a few Governor General's Performing Arts Awards galas at the NAC. The gala has always proven to be a prestigious awards show, highlighting Canada's contributions to many genres of the arts. It's an excellent sampler, and I always find it exciting to find out who was nominated. This event is my annual opportunity to get 'dressed to the nines', hobnob and let loose. They have excellent catering and wine; and I've had lots of fun with friends at this event.

    Always a wonderful event

by Ottawagirl1 on 2014-02-17National Arts Centre - Ottawa

I have been many years in a row, I look forward to it and try never to miss this wonderful Canadian event. The performers and hosts are always top notch and the production of the show is well done. I find I usually know some of the award winners, and it is fascinating to learn about the others. They are chosen from different genres of the performing arts and have all made significant contributions to their communities in Canada. I tend to enjoy the musical performers the most, but it depends on the year. Southam Hall is a great venue and the NAC puts on a lovely gala with a red carpet feel to honour the winners. The receptions before and after are a bonus as well with delicious food, drinks and desserts. Definitely an event worth attending.

    GG Awards

by bissonchris on 2014-02-17NAC - Ottawa

My friends and I have attended the awards 3 years in a row and looking forward to the upcoming show in May. We have a great time every time. The pre and post award receptions are well catered and lots of fun!

    Exciting, funny, and moving.

by JaniceH on 2014-02-17National Arts Centre - Ottawa

I was lucky enough to have nominated a GGPAA recipient, and have also attended the show in previous years, so I have several experiences to speak from. It's been just a wonderful evening each time -- the pageantry and sparkle, the moving and funny tributes to each artist's body of work and personality, and sometimes big surprises. (Recipients aren't *supposed* to be performing, but that hasn't stopped a few of them!) And yes, while it's not about meeting and greeting the audience, there's still lots of opportunity to rub shouders and even share some gab over a drink with the notables. Two thumbs up. Can't wait for this year!
