About

Singer, songwriter, and musician Wally De Backer, a.k.a. Gotye, first appeared upon the Australian music scene in 2006 with his self-recorded album Like Drawing Blood – an effort that yielded his first local hit, “Hearts a Mess,” and won an AIR (Australian Independent Record) award. He also found success as part of the Australian trio The Basics. In 2011, however, Gotye would catapult to fame with the undeniably infectious song “Somebody That I Used to Know” (featuring New Zealand singer Kimbra) -- the video of which spread across the web like wildfire. Music fans worldwide took notice and, almost entirely on the merit of this one breakthrough hit, bought tickets and filled venues to see Gotye perform LIVE. A gifted drummer and percussionist as well as a vocalist with impressive range, Gotye’s often times understated but always innovative music -- a mix of quirky electronic sounds and acoustic rhythms -- evokes a mood both retro and modern. Songs like “Eyes Wide Open,” Easy Way Out,” and “State of the Art” take on new dimension during his concerts which feature De Backer on drums and various other instruments, and which utilize projected images that echo the striking visual artistry of Gotye’s music videos. Although his voice has often been compared to Peter Gabriel and Sting, his music is more inspired by Godley & Crème and DJ Shadow.

Gotye was great, crowd was awful

    by Thal67 on 2012-09-24Métropolis - Montreal

Gotye gave a great show, songs were excellent and the videos in the back were very interesting. Sadly, the crowd was talking almost all the time. People were asking others to stop talking and even Gotye asked the crowd if they could stay silent for two slower songs. The worst crowd ever!!

Wonderful show by very talent artists!

by Nickknack1212 on 2012-09-22Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

What an amazing performance. My 13 year old son and I attend a lot of concerts and he says this was his favorite. I have to say it was in my top 5 as well. The music was amazing, the on stage switching between instruments was entertaining, the layers of sound were mind blowing. Loved the videos playing in the background. Wally came across as human, approachable, energetic, talented, and a bit of a perfectionist (understandable). He and the other band members looked like they were having fun and it made the whole show fun for the audience. Seeing the exuberance with which Wally was playing various instruments was quite the sight. The screaming from the audience and the encore 'demand' hopefully let them know how much we all enjoyed their show.

Warm up acts weren't too thrilling but Gotye was awesome. He has lot of cool synthesizing stuff and a really awesome sound. Also very very cool accompanying videos.

    Gorgeous

by ShawnUBC on 2012-09-04Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

It was a really unforgettable experience and concert. Gotye is a great musician and singer. I still remember that I bought two tickets for my wife and me without telling her, I thought she will be surprised by this when that day is coming. I think I did it. She was super exciting when she knew she was lining up for Gotye's concert on street at that day.

I went to this concert not really knowing what to expect... I left with my mind completely blown. Gotye put on an incredible show and the sound was spectacular. If you ever get the chance to see this group live, I would ABSOLUTELY recommend it! The concert was so much fun. Also, it is much more exciting if you are on the floor.
