Awesome show by Big Sugar and Gov't Mule

by Les on 2023-09-21Massey Hall - Toronto

Great show by both bands! Big Sugar opened and played for a full hour with Warren Haynes joining them for the tail end of the set. Quick 1/2 hour intermission and the lights dimmed for Gov't Mule, who put on a marathon set, with Gordie Johnson joining for the end. The light show was amazing. 5 Stars and the ticket prices did not break the bank. Well worthwhile show to see!

Warren and his musicians great, some crackling in the cables

by LeonardBlack on 2023-09-20MTELUS - Montreal

Warren is definitely one of the greats together with Jeff, SRV, Billy Gibbons, Clapton! Some crackling noise from cables, apparently fault of the venue as Warren was giving questioning looks to the techs! In the beginning of the show his Soldano SLO wouldn’t fire up, so roadie promptly replaced it with another SLO, what a beast of an amplifier!!

    mixed bag

by Sunny Boy on 2023-09-20MTELUS - Montreal

Big Sugar went on too long, nice variety of styles and a couple of good cover songs, but always full blast : no dynamics, always loud. Good musicians but that is a typical problem for a trio that wants to show how big and in your face they are. Gets tiresome. When did subtlety become a crime? Gov't Mule - great musicians, love Warren Haynes voice, guitar playing and guitar timbre, but I don't care for their style: busy repetitive bass lines, long sometimes aimless arrangements. Keyboard player had trouble with his gear and often fiddled with it. One of the amp heads in Haynes rig had to be changed in mid-show. Bass too loud, vocals too low - a common and widely-known problem at MTelus. Overall: so so show.

Fun, but poor sound quality in gallery

by Jan on 2023-09-19Massey Hall - Toronto

Our seats were in Massey Hall's "gallery". Unfortunately, the sound mix wasn't great from that vantage point - the sound was muddy. We barely heard the organ in the first couple of songs, or the trumpet later on. It's too bad because I suspect it was great on the floor and balcony!

    Gov’t Mule with Big Sugar

by Jnfoster on 2023-09-18Massey Hall - Toronto

Great show. Excellent double bill. I have not been to the venue since the upgrades. Sound experience was second to none. The opening act Big Sugar played a tight 10 song set with Warren Haynes stepping in and making a guest appearance on 2 songs. Gov’t Mule was great and played 10-12 songs and had a fantastic stage and light show that worked well in Massey hall. They played old favourites and songs from their new album. They brought Gordie Johnson out and jammed on I’m A Ran, Freeway Jam, 30 Days In The Hole and a great encore of I Shall Be Released. It was a great night in Toronto.

Gov't Mule is such a talented band.

by Dgreener on 2023-09-18Massey Hall - Toronto

Warren Haynes s is a guitar God. Any guitar lover would love this concert. Thank you to Massey Hall for making it possible for these bands to perform in Toronto. It is unfortunate that the seating is sheer torture with such narrow seats and no leg room. I was in so much pain afterwards. These concerts are great value I guess as they say no pain no gain.

    Amazing. Great show!

by Canucklehead on 2023-09-17Massey Hall - Toronto

This was such a fun show. The jamming ND improvisation made it memorable. Haven't heard guitar playing like that in decades.

    Great concert!

by Jacy on 2023-09-17Massey Hall - Toronto

Big Sugar, a popular Toronto band that started in the late 80's, opened the concert. Their songs were really good, and lead guitarist and front man, Gordie Johnson, was a superb guitarist, but played sooooo loud that his lyrics were not discernable and he used so much distortion that his great solos were a bit of a mishmash. When Warren Haynes joined him during their set there was a notable difference in the amount of distortion. Gov't Mule were awesome! (They were loud, but much less than Big Sugar.) The lighting effects were great too. I love Warren's vocals, and of course his guitar playing is brilliant, so I thoroughly enjoyed all their songs!
