    Gregory Porter is an experience.

by curmor on 2018-08-12Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

Hearing the man live is something special. His voice is truly one of a kind. The venue was great, however, a couple gripes. He did do two encores. Both were welcome, except he hadn't performed his most famous song, "Be Good (The Lion Song)" in the main set, so the audience was anticipating it one of the two encores. Unfortunately, as the audience stood in anticipation of the crowd favourite, we were instead treated to an elongated drum solo that commenced as the rest of the band left the stage for the final time, and ended literally 10 minutes later. I've never seen a show end like that... ever. Very anticlimactic. Disappointing. I only started listening to Gregory Porter after I heard and was moved by that recording. It was the only reason I bought the tickets. Unfortunate. I'm only recommending the show, because I would just like to think he was mad at Toronto or the TD Jazz Fest organizers or something and that other cities will get the song. My cousin saw him in Atlanta a month before and he performed it. So... yeah.

What a wonderful show. Gregory Porter has a beautiful, extraordinary voice and it was great to see him in person after listening to him for so long on the radio.

Gregory was just the best and the accompanying band (especially the sax player and pianist) made the night even more enjoyable.

    Gregory Porter - Gentle Powerhouse

by Leeli on 2018-06-28Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

One of the best concerts ever! Gregory Porter’s voice is without rival and the venue was befitting of that. The range and power in his voice is sublime! The show was a mix of several of his standards and beloved Nat King Cole songs. His ability to emote lyrics that make you feel the subtle nuances of a storyteller to robust raise the roof vocals is unparalleled. Gregory has an engaging and yet sweet personality. A refreshing gentle giant. The only issue I have is that he doesn’t come to Toronto enough! As if that weren’t enough, having Toronto jazz icon Molly Johnson open the show made for a night to be remembered. It left me hopeful for future collaborations.

    A compelling performer

by Anonymous on 2018-06-28Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

A rich and smooth baritone with a relaxed stage presence. He could hold your attention even if he were just singing the phone book. A little disappointed though, that he only sang two Nat Cole tunes because he does them very well. His backing quartet were experienced jazzmen and Porter gave them lots of room to perform. The veteran drummer stayed on the stage playing solo for over 5 minutes after the others had left the stage at the end of the performance. I hadn't seen anything like this before.
