Not the best... not the worst....
by T. F. on 2020-02-24Casino Rama Resort - RamaI felt bad for Hannibal to begin with, he came to the stage to a half empty venue... never a great moment for a performer. So I don't know if this factor played into the effort he put in or not... I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that the show might have been better if the crowd had been better. Now the show.... To being with, the show started 15 minutes late. This is a professional venue, I expected more. I drove some way to be there on time, I am sure they could have managed to get the show going when it was supposed to. His opener, Nile Seguin, is an average local comic who tried his best to get the limited crowd into the mood. His humour is always ok, but never belly busting. The next comic however, I felt must travel with Hannibal because he is definitely not from around here. He is a very "urban" black comic a la B.E.T. network style. His humour did NOT play to the crowd you would expect at Casino Rama. The sad thing was that it should have been apparent quickly to him that it wasn't working and he should have tried something else... crowd work... dad jokes.... anything but the unrelateable material he was presenting. Finally, after the openers were finished I was excited for Hannibal to take the stage.... but no, the VJ (?) Tony Trimm announced that there would be a 15 minute break before the headliner came out. I thought the point of an opening act was to pump up the audience and get them in the mood for the main act. Taking a 15 minute break negates ANY energy that was built up... so Hannibal came out to a cold crowd. To his benefit, he had the room in stitches with the first few things he threw out. Unfortunately, after that he didn't seem to have anything planned and he just hit a wall talking about the American Democratic candidates being "old"... which went on for WAY too long. Then it just seemed to be an evening of ramblings with Hannibal. Some were funny, but most were just random thoughts and ramblings that seemed disconnected and pulled out of a hat. The kind of thing I would expect in a small club while a comic is working on new material, building TOWARDS a show like this... big stage... an hour of time.... headlining. Overall I have to say that I was disappointed. I've seen Hannibal before and he can be hilarious with a well thought out show that has a "flow". This show was not reflective of the mind or capabilities of the artist.... it just wasn't a great show. To be fair.... he said he would never come back to that venue either.
