Great show, amazing talent, thrilled to be able to see him.
Though I love Mr. Cotton's music, the show lacked energy and it was clear that Cotton was battling some significant health issues. He spoke to the audience a few times, but his voice was so weak and raspy, I couldn't understand a word. Credit to the man for soldiering on under difficult circumstances, but it does impact the show.
I'm not sure how old James is but he was an instant hit with the crowd, we all loved him. He went from song to song. He also had the odd short story to share us, which sounded almost painful for him to express, his talking voice is gone.
I was very excited when I heard that James Cotton was coming to Winnipeg. He has always been one of my favorite artists. He was clearly unable to perform as he did in the past but it was simply an honour just to attend one of his shows. Pretty talented backing band.
The warmup acts were very good and set the stage for the main event. Despite their clear brilliance as musicians they seem to be unable to avoid the frequent problem of many blues groups and that is over amplifying the sound. This leads to painful eardrums, distorted sounds (the vocal were a blur) and a real loss of musical quality. I look forward to listening to their recordings where the quality of the music is not ruined by the poor sound quality due completely, I believe, to this insistence on loudness at any cost. I would love to hear this group play acoustically.
I was thrilled to get a chance to see both of these amazing artists live in Calgary. I have been listening to their music for many years. There are a number of performers I want to see during our lifetimes & these are just two. I also appreciated the subsequent interview CKUA did with Mose. It really completed the experience by learning more about so many years of writing, composing & performing.
The James Cotton Band was amazing. The lead guitarist was incredible with amazing vocals and the bassist was high energy. Would have like more from James himself but considering his age and living hard I can cut him some slack. He still has some amazing chops.
James Cotton was awesome, his band was amazing. High energy and great playing.
Double bill, Mose was OK made the small crowd laugh, and Cottons band rocked the house.
I took my daughter who loves jazz and blues who's only 10. It was way past her bedtime but she still wanted to stay. This is the first year we've attended the Jazz festival and I can't believe how we lucked out with such a great entertainer. We'll be returning next year and hope to see James Cotton again.
