JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW IN CONCERT:

Genre-bending Irish musician James Vincent McMorrow is a master of stirring up emotion, combining haunting vocals and beautifully sparse arrangements to stunning effect on his swelling compositions. While his 2010 debut fit relatively comfortably in the realm of indie folk, 2014's Post Tropical is another story, combining elements of R&B, hip hop, and electronica on subtly layered productions that evade genre categorization. And then there's that voice — a falsetto that's certainly broken a few hearts, as flooring in live concert as it is on record. Already a revered live performer in Europe, Morrow has North American audiences eagerly awaiting his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Ireland's James Vincent McMorrow picked up the guitar at 19, developing an idiosyncratic singing and songwriting style that he claims owes much to female artists of the '70s due to the lofty pitch of his voice. After cutting his teeth performing in local pubs, McMorrow isolated himself in a coastal cabin to record his debut, 2010's Early in the Morning. The album was a hit, garnering positive reviews, a No. 1 chart position, and platinum certification from the RIAA. In 2011, McMorrow's cover of Steve Winwood's '80s gem "Higher Love" brought him even more attention, getting picked up for a popular British ad campaign. With the 2014 release of sophomore album Post Tropical, McMorrow unveiled a new stylistic direction, once again climbing the charts and embarking on an international tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"JVM is a legend in the making. The music blankets his melancholy lyrical genius. It is truly timeless. If you haven't seen him, do it now while he is emerging ... or regret it later."

"He and the group were so ON. They were even better in person that we could have imagined. James' voice is superb and the band was so in sync."

"I've never posted a review before, but James Vincent McMorrow deserves far more praise than the world has given him thus far. In a word: INCREDIBLE. What an absolutely mind-blowing voice he has."

    Very Intimate

by 2019 on 2019-12-04The Great Hall - Toronto

Great choice of venue. James was extremely funny and great with the audience. Vocal performance was possibly even better than the studio versions in some songs. All around great show. Was a bit shorter than most concerts but he got a lot done in that time. Definetly an experience worth having and would highly recommend.

    Great songs. Too short.

by Yikidiyak on 2019-12-03The Great Hall - Toronto

James has outstanding songs. He is a great composer. In fact, I consider some of his work masterpieces. Unfortunately, he did only 12 songs. It was more like a jam session than anything else. Then again, I am happy to have seen him play live.

    James was incredible!

by Lily07 on 2014-04-05The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

The moment James came on stage, he immediately sang his first song and blew me away. His live versions sounded exactly like his studio versions. He hit all of the same notes and never attempted to play it safe. The band was exceptional as well. The bassist, keyboardist, and drummer were just as talented with their instruments. They also sang some of the best background vocals I've ever heard. Everything was perfect. James said he wanted the lights to look like he was performing on the moon, and somehow that made the night that much sweeter. The spotlight created a strange halo on him, and when he sang--it was magical. He was funny and sweet and mesmerizing. Definitely worth it!!

James Vincent McMorrow and Aiden Knight killed it!

by Kp1995 on 2014-04-05The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Definitely one of the best shows that I have been to. Both of their voices have my chills. The instruments were all amazing as well. It was a super laid back concert too, which was nice. The danforth music hall was a really good location for it.

Intimate and big at the same time

by pkpowerofone on 2014-04-05The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

You'd expect a JVM show to be intimate and it was, but his band is amazing and I was surprised to hear how BIG some of songs sound live. I really hope he comes out with a live record or DVD. The stage design and attention to detail with the lighting was unexpected. It really felt like a show. Can't wait to see him again. That voice....

    Amazing voice (and back-up band!)

by ummars32 on 2012-08-12West End Cultural Centre - Winnipeg

Overall, a great concert. James Vincent McMorrow is a captivating performer and his voice is incredible! His in-between song banter was witty and added to the show. The only thing I was disappointed in was that he did not introduce the members of his amazing back-up band. They definitely deserved recognition. A great up and coming performer - definitely worth the $20 ticket price!!

    JVM

by JohnMayerFAN1988 on 2012-07-17Virgin Mobile Mod Club - Toronto

amazing concert by an amazing musician and singer. It was just him and his guitar but that was all that was needed to have the entire crowd enjoying his music. Great version of If I had a Boat without a mic too. Had the whole crowd singing along by the end. Overall a great show and I can't wait to see him again.
