Jarvis singing Sam Cooke was phenomenal. He and 'the soul station' were on pointe Saturday night at NAC's Fourth Stage. First half of the show was strictly Sam Cooke covers, as featured on Church's latest album, The Soul Station. Backed by 1 pianist and 3 fantastic male singers, he sung some of the best, Steal Away, Cupid, the powerful 'A Change is Gonna Come', and We're Havin' A Party...which judging by audience reaction and willingness to sing and clap along, we were all ready to have that party all night long.
The great thing for me, being a Philosopher Kings fan was after intermission when Jarvis started pulling songs from his own playbook. All the better. No one wanted the night to end, and during his finale, the party continued as they pulled audience members onto the stage to dance.
Jarvis' smooth voice is distinct. I could probably pick it out of a line-up, and the songs he chose showed off that range. Big applause to his back-up singers too who were each featured in a song during a meddley.
The NAC fourth stage is one of my favourite venue's for music in Ottawa because of the intimacy. With it's cafe-style seating and low ceilings, it feels like you're in an intimate setting, that the artists are singing right to you.
