    Josh Ritter was amazing!

by Adeline on 2014-08-04Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Very pleasantly surprised. Not a big fan of country folk music; more my husband's thing, but it was amazing. I found him energetic; the music vibrant and before too long found myself dancing along with everyone else. Because of the noise of the crowd, I found it hard to hear the lyrics and I like to know what I'm listening to, but after awhile that didn't seem to matter. Going to go to itunes and download his music to hear more.

Josh Ritter at Know United Church

by FionaMM on 2014-02-04Knox United Church (Calgary) - Calgary

Josh Ritter was amazing live! Lots of quirky stories and comments between songs as well as always grinning and happy. He used the acoustics of the building and sang a song acapella as well as some parts of songs. It was a beautiful night! Lots of old favourites and new songs!

Almost as amazing as the last time.

Josh Ritter + a 100 year old cathedral church = an amazing evening. Don't know what to say really. For those in the know Josh Ritter is on of the most under appreciated musical acts out there. Powerful lyrics, memorable melodies, an infectiously joyful stage presence are combined with the voice of a renegade angle every time he takes the stage. You take all that talent and place it in a century old sandstone cathedral designed with great acoustics and wonderful sight lines and you are ensured a memorable evening. And this time was no different. From start to finish Josh held the audience captivated by his performance. One after another his hits followed. Just as one would end and you think to yourself "well that was the best of the night", he would start to strum the opening cords of yet another hit you had forgotten you loved so much. And I'm not being excessively boastful. When you get to know his music it is as good as anyones. He is easily labeled a modern day Van Morrison or Dylan. With the only differences being he still loves to perform on stage and his voice is as good as his lyrics. With all that praise being said it is worth noting there were a few small things I noticed that made this performance not as perfect as his last visits here. First, he was not traveling with his full band this time. Although this was billed as an "acoustic tour", and the two musicians he played with were truly amazing, the show with a full ensemble is just a bit more powerful. Secondly, for what ever reason, when he plays this venue the crowed tends to stay seated in their pews. Maybe its being surrounded by all the gothic revival architecture, grand pipe organ and three story tall stained class windows but something about this venue pacifies the audience. And since his music is so damn great to dance along to it kinda makes you wish the venue wasn't so historic and beautiful. Lastly, he uses a few stage devices during the show that seemed genuinely spontaneous the first time you see him perform, but when you see him give the same hart warming story or ask if there is any way the lights could be dimmed for the same song as he asked to be dimmed the last time, the magic of the moment is just a little thiner. That being said I would recommend you go see him play solo in a dive bar washroom if that was the only chance you had. So these small complaints are really only the product of being lucky enough to see him perform several times. If you get a chance to see Josh live at one of the medium sized venues he now plays, do. It is a real treat and there is a real chance he might not be playing venues this small for much longer.

Ritter was great, and Isakov was fantastic

by HugePGfan on 2014-02-03Arden Theatre - St Albert

Great show. Had never been to the Arden Theatre before, and now I will have to keep an eye on upcoming events, because it's a great venue. It's small and intimate, with excellent acoustics and not a bad seat in the house - we were near the back, but it didn't matter. Several times Josh Ritter unplugged and stepped to the front of the stage to sing, and the sound carried across the theater. I went to the show because I'm a big fan of Gregory Alan Isakov, the opening act. I hadn't heard Josh Ritter before, but I thoroughly enjoyed his performance. The only thing I would criticize is that I would have liked Isakov to have more time - I'm still a bigger fan of his than Ritter, and he definitely delivered. He should really be headlining his own tour instead of opening for someone else (no slight intended towards Ritter).

    Great show!

by LizaMS on 2014-02-03Arden Theatre - St Albert

First time seeing Josh Ritter in concert and wasn't disappointed. Great energy and musicianship. I am a big fan of opener Gregory Alan Isakov - would love to see him again with his full band and wish his set was a bit longer.
