    A charming Kat takes Toronto!

by TBfromToronto on 2015-10-24The Great Hall - Toronto

Kat Edmonson chose to play a smaller "intimate" venue in The Great Hall as her tour stop in Toronto and the small crowd could not have been happier for it. After an engaging opening act, MILTON, sang a short set of his honest and heartfelt original songs filled with humour and personal anecdotes, the crowd was ready for the main attraction. With her trio of band members supporting her beautifully, she sang and swayed her way through most of her better-known original songs and tossed in a few covers (one stand-out was a duet of an original Milton tune she sang with him) and a couple new tunes. Kat is definitely an original thanks to her unique voice which effortlessly transitions from playful to sultry to yearning to heartbroken while delivering each with perfectly-timed phrasing that reminded me of another of my all-time favourite vocalists, Blossom Dearie (who I was lucky enough to see years ago at The Senator when she was 74 years young!). But Kat's voice is just one part of the reason she's so capable of captivating and enchanting any audience. She's absolutely charming and clearly admires the music her band shares and supports her with too. It was refreshing to see a singer genuinely admire them and let her band members have their moment in the spotlight too. I have been a fan for some time but had yet to see her and the friend I had invited to join me had never even heard of Kat before but she was a new fan by the end of the evening. And I could not be more pleased with the entire evening and can't wait to catch Kat performing live again.
