Leon Redbone was a treat. Taking us back to a time when music was fun. The man is a showman who knows how to work a crowd.
He still has it! The voice, the whistle, the guitar playing and the banter. And we sang along with him, perhaps not so well as he would have liked but we were there to hear him after all - not us!
The shwo was amazing. Of course his musical talents are incredible but his on stage performance was hilarious. His banter between the audience and the piano player (whose name escapes me right now, I apologize), was seemingly unrehearsed. He would bring up the same jokes again and agan and his impromptu playing was so good, it was hard to tell if it really was improv or just years of experience. I would highly reccomend seeing this show.
It was a cold night in Hamilton, but the lineup had moved indoors when we arrived. As we funnelled in, we saw the Studio Theatre had been set up like a club, tables and chairs, with gallery seats on the outsides. This always adds a casual touch to the proceedings. We ran in to an old friend and his daughter who joined us at our table, and we sat back for an acoustic evening. First up Owen McBride who I hadn't seen since 1970 at Mariposa. He's still singing the same songs and even telling the same jokes. He worked hard at getting everyone to sing along, and by the end of his short set had about 50% participation. Then a short break, and the main attraction. Leon arrived with his guitar and took his seat near a table with a lamp, a pianist was his accompanist. The two of them bantered back and forth (shouldn't the pianist have been mic'd?) and played beautifully. Leon maintained the laconic stage presence for which he is famous. Some folks were not familiar with this attitude and wondered if there was something wrong with him. He ran through a selection of old classics, some blues, some burlesque songs. His ragtime guitar was still extraordinary, and the piano accompaniment stunning. It all came to an early end, we were home before 11pm. But a good time was had by all.
