    Madame butterfly have me wings.

by Nightfaze on 2014-04-29National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The arias were stunning. The kind of music that reaches inside your soul. Madame butterfly at the NAC in ottawa was beautiful. Opera Lyra did a beautiful production and succeeded in delivering a rich opera full of abandonment, betrayal and tragedy. The simple yet stunning use of blue and red lights enriched the arias and performance of the cast. My favorite scene is when ciao-ciao San is waiting for her beloved captain. There are petals of flowers that fall in the blue lighting if the moon as she finished her aria. It was grandiose. I am glad I experienced on stage one of my favorite operas.

I love the Opera, and I had been waiting to see this one for a long time. I thought it was gorgeous performance with a beautiful leading Soprano. You can't go wrong with Puccini!

    A feast for the eye

by JoSz on 2014-04-28National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Madame Butterfly left no dry eye in the theatre - she captured emotions, intimacy. Her brilliant performance was supported by highly skilled team. The maestro and his orchestra gave the firm support and brought out the colorful reach bucket of Puccini’s gorgeous score. A feast for the eye; a great night The NAC was packed up; this is showing up how hungry we are in Ottawa for these kind events.

The show was alright when compared to the Canadian Opera Company's version it was alright but not stellar. I would see it again but it didn't really excite me.

Invited a few good friends to a surprise outing to view their first performance of Madama Butterfly. They were so pleased with the talented cast and their wonderful voices. We now plan to return to their next performance.

    Madama Butterfly - just "ok"

by Stymie16 on 2014-04-22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Although the overall performance was acceptable and the story-line still held the drama, the performances were uneven. The lead soprano was excellent, with the rest of the cast being fair to good. It was hard to hear some of the voices over the orchestra. From an optics point-of-view, the set was far too sparse and boring, they could have done so much more with it. Although the orchestra played well, it was unfortunate that they didn't dress in appropriate "opera" attire. I guess I'm just used to world-class orchestras dressing the part, men in tuxes, ladies in long gowns. So - overall - a nice evening out, but certainly not worth the terribly expensive ticket price.
