    Quite the Production

by GraciePie on 2010-04-26Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg

This was an outstanding rendition of the classic Opera, Carmen! The sets were wonderful and the cast was extremely talented. Very well done! I would have recommended this to friends if I hadn't seen it on closing night!

    Carmen was a bit dissapointing

by Macek on 2010-04-25Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg

The performances and singing of Carmen and Don Jose were excellent. However I was dissapointed with the sets and costumes used throughout the play. The props and colors used gave more an impression of a dreary medieval city's underworld than a taste of gypsies, bullfights etc.

    Carmen can't be beat

by Squire on 2010-04-24Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg

Accompanied by the magnificent Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the music and drama of Bizet's Carmen was brought to life by the powerful singing, dancing and acting of the talented cast. Kirstin Chavez was absolutely believable as the temptress of whatever man she chose as a lover. The parade of men she rejected or teased never gave up pursuing her favours. Note that I am not a regular opera goer and walked out at the interval of the only other opera I attended, but I enjoyed all of the three and a half hours of this production. Each of the four acts left me wanting more. Carmen captivated my attention more than most of the Broadway style musicals, and equalled the French version of Notre Dame De Paris.

    Carmen fills your head

by samoyedman on 2010-04-21Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg

Carmen was a feast for the eyes and ears. Carmen as performed by Kirstin Chavez was performed exquisitely with beautiful vocals and personification of the title role. kirsten's voice was beautiful and her movement on stage captivating. She may have been only upstaged slightly by Monica Huisman who performed Micaela her was pitch perfect and may haven stolen a few hearts. David Pomeroy as Don Jose was absolutely brilliant in his performance. I felt he sang the role with passion and he was wonderful to hear, I do not have the superlatives to describe the power he brought to the role. My only disappointment was Luis Ledesma performing as Escamillo. His voive was overpowered by all the other main characters and I did not feel his voice carried and lacked a little depth. The WSO was absolutely splendid. Their performance alone was almost worth the price of admission.

Manitoba Opera's Carmen is a must see!

by spiritednortherngirl on 2010-04-21Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg

Unsure if Carmen could live up to last year's Madama Butterfly I can confidently report that Carmen was well worth the trip to the auditorium on opening night! Superb comstuming, sets and singing had me riveted...I found myself utterly lost in the story, heart wrenched for Don Jose yet consumed the complicated Carmen....herself beautiful.....yet fickle...do yourself a favour and get a ticket--prepare to be dazzled! Sumptous.

    It was okay

by ShanRenee on 2010-04-18Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg

It was our first opera and we're really to have experienced Carmen, but it was so long! And it started so late that we weren't out of there until after 1130pm, too late for us. The opera would have been more enjoyable had it been a little shorter and started at 7pm as opposed to 8pm.

The principle female was amazing! Her voice was that of an angel. I took my mom to the event and I everytime she sang, I could hear my mom sighing. It was spectacular! The Barber and Lindoro/Almavive were awesome! very well done! BRAVI!

    The Barber of Seville

by RichardP on 2009-11-30Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg

I was amazed to see such an amazing rendition of the Barber of Seville in Winnipeg. World class talent with unforgettable voices were not the only reason it was the best Barber of Seville I have seen to date. Everything, from the stage to the mise-en-scene and the little extra quips to make this comedy even funnier than it already is. Bravissimo!

    It was a great debut!!!

by CaCu on 2009-11-30Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg

It was our first time at the Opera, I'm really happy that we've chosen this play. Very good performers, very good music, a little bit of humor, easy to follow. I would recomend this play to people willing to experience what the Opera is about.

This was my first time attending the Opera, so I had little idea of what to expect, or if I'd even enjoy it at all! However, as soon as the curtain went up, and the singing began, I was filled with childlike wonder and awe. I never imagined Opera could be so much fun, and would rate The Barber of Seville as Number 1. The costumes, the cast, the music, the scenery were all wonderful - a treat for the eyes and the ears! If you are planning to venture into the world of Opera for the first time, then make The Barber of Seville your first choice. You will not be disappointed. I have attended the Ballet, and Musicals for years, and am now pleased to add Opera to my list of passions.
