MODEST MOUSE IN CONCERT:
Indie rock veterans Modest Mouse enjoy a level of mainstream success that few other indie acts can touch. While the band's intelligent lyrics and expertly crafted songs made them critical darlings in the early '00s, their eclectic live shows earned them legions of fans. With their first new album in five years due out in 2014, Modest Mouse are gearing up for headlining slots at the Boston Calling and Shaky Knees music festivals. Fans lucky enough to catch the band at these rare appearances will be among the first to hear material from the new album — performed alongside all of their greatest hits, of course.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Formed in Washington in 1993, Modest Mouse found an early home on legendary indie labels K Records and Sub Pop. After moving to Up Records for their 1996 debut full-length, the band achieved breakthrough success with 1997's Lonesome Crowded West, which drew praise from critics and earned them a cult following. While 2000's The Moon & Antarctica was another success, it was 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News that really broke things wide open — the album went multi-platinum and brought the band their first chart exposure with hit singles "Float On" and "Ocean Breathes Salty." In 2007, the band's fifth studio album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank landed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, effectively rendering their indie status null and securing their position as a festival headline-caliber act.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"They were honestly amazing. They played with so much energy, played about 20 songs, and absolutely tore the place down. A must see if you get a chance."
"The sounds, the lights, and the crowd were unbelievable. Isaac really blows your mind, his beautiful music and lyrics had the entire crowd swaying with their eyes closed. It was an event I will never forget..."
"Modest Mouse put on an amazing show. Every song sounded even better than the studio version."
Awesome show, Modest Mouse was fantastic and Mattress was a fun opener.
Modest Mouse didn’t really make a huge attempt to connect with their audience but overall the vibes were right, they played great & it was a memorable evening out. As others have stated, the Commodore Ballroom is notorious for their low sound production. Aka instruments & music over shadow the vocals & lyrics :/ shame.
Modest Mouse brought the house down, surprising exactly nobody! What made this show extra special was that it was the anniversary tour of one of their earlier albums; this meant that basically every single person there was a true, hardcore fan. The energy in that crowd of superfans was unbeatable, and added so much passion to an already incredible set of performers!
Not a good venue for this type of artist. It was way too loud.
Unlike the sound at Union Modest Mouse could have been worse.
Jacob and the lads brought the entertainment and played a great selection of songs. But I whoever was in charge of the sound check and show blew it. Everything was cranked to 15/10. And though the tunes were recognizable, they were severely distorted and the lyrics impossible to make out. I've seen acts at the Jube before where the visiting act took into account the venue's acoustics and out shined them selves. This groups crew was not one of those times. :(
Modest Mouse live is always great, no matter how cruddy or ill-equipped the venue. I was less than impressed with Union Hall in Edmonton as a disabled individual. Accessable seating wasn't really a thing, we were placed on bar stools next to the beer bucket girl where drunk and rowdy patrons frequently bothered us about our seating arrangements. I was informed after the fact that there was in fact a wheelchair available ramp but it was from the back of the building, and there was no safe space on the main floor for me to not be hurt or crowded had I attended in my chair. Would be great if ticket master sold accessable tickets so when venue changes occur the patrons with mobility devices or accessable needs are considered and not left with dangerous and uncomfortable arrangements in a venue that isn't designed with us in mind.
I very much enjoyed the show and the music. I knew about half the songs, but enjoyed listening to all the others as well as Modest Mouse has an extensive repetoire and it is good to hear some of the ones I don't regularly listen to. The musicianship of the band is excellent and they put on a very good, entertaining show. Isaac Brock leads the way and has a good sense of humour when speaking between songs. The only negative is that my girlfriend and I both thought that for the type of venue (an accoustically designed concert hall), they had the volume somewhat louder than necessary. Could have turned it down which would have helped hear the singing a bit better as well as let the musicianship show through with a clearer overall sound. Otherwise excellent!
Walked into modest mouse absolutely excited!!! I have been waiting 30 years for this concert since I was 7 and they came into my life. The music was waaaaaayyy too loud for the singing especially for the jubilee audit auditorium!!! You couldn’t hear any words he was singing over the music it was just fuzzy. Then they left stage and we’re expected back for an encore as per the usual! They made everyone wait 2-3 min in the pitch black before they decided to come back on stage and now start with the number 1 they have lampshades on fire. I didn’t even get to hear lampshades on fire because much like quite a few other people we walked out of the concert unimpressed!!! I AM SO DISSAPOINTED AND DISSATISFIED WITH THIS CONCERT!! I have only ever walked out on two concerts my whole life and I go to ten minimum every year. Thanks modest mouse for ruining my experience!
The audio mixing was a bit off. Isaac needed to me much louder it was hard to make out what he was saying when he wasn't singing loud parts and while talking. Otherwise absolutely amazing had a great night.
