About

“MORE THAN A BROADWAY SHOW. A CELEBRATION OF MUSIC THAT TRANSFORMED AMERICA!”
– CBS Sunday Morning

It began as one man's story… became everyone's music… and is now Broadway's musical. MOTOWN THE MUSICAL is the true American dream story of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and many more. Motown shattered barriers, shaped our lives and made us all move to the same beat. Featuring classic songs such as “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” experience the story behind the music in the record-breaking smash hit MOTOWN THE MUSICAL!

Quite an education!! It was more of a story line than I expected and we enjoyed that. The music was great. A family event we thoroughly enjoyed.

    Motown - I Love You

by Anonymous on 2018-03-01Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The 'rags to riches' story of Motown Records has always captivated me. How a visionary like Berry Gordy Jr was able to do what he did is part of the reason that moved me over the last 30 years to read books about Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, Berry Gordy, Jr., Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Motown-the record company, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and David Ruffin. If there was something out there about Motown, I made a point to find it. A few days ago, my wife and 7I went to see 'Motown - the Musical.' It is (for the most part) based on Berry Gordy's book, "To Be Loved," which I have also read. The show captures Gordy’s vision from its embryonic days in the late 50's, to the ‘Motown 25’ celebration that took place in 1983 (a 'celebration' that was filled with intrigue and emotion). For those who have seen 'Motown - the Musical' and feel the way I do about the music, I'm sure you'll agree that there are many magical performances. If you haven't seen the show and you're just a casual fan of the music, you owe it to yourself to learn about the history behind the songs. It is worth understanding, even if it is slanted toward Gordy's opinion. For this fan who closed his eyes and dreamt that he was actually watching the ‘tempting Temptations’ or the Jackson 5, it was an emotional afternoon - and yes, I was moved to tears on more than one occasion. Motown music (and its artists) hold a special place in my heart. It always will. I love the musicians who formed the sound (the Funk Brothers), and to this day I believe that the music and the talent that was developed in that little house in Detroit, ranks among the greatest in Popular music. For 2 ½ hrs today, I walked through the doors of ‘Hitsville USA’ and was part of that magic. Thanks for all the memories, Motown. I love you.

    An Entertaining Motown Bio

by Ellavader on 2018-02-28Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Excellent singing and choreography. Seamless set transitions and integration of the Motown story with the music. It was uplifting without minimizing the challenges of race, competition, politics and love.

    Entertaining but too long

by cwcc on 2018-02-28Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

the show was quite good but much too long, especially the first half. Diana Ross was great, as was Marvin Gaye and Barry Gordy. The singing and dancing were entertaining but very slow in some parts

    Overall disappointing

by Jbc123 on 2018-02-28Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I was expecting there to be more audience engagement. There was none. When people hear those old Motown songs it usually gets you fired up but I didn’t feel that way at this show.
