New England Patriots History

Originally known as the Boston Patriots, the New England Patriots were the eighth and final franchise to join the American Football League in 1959. After joining the NFL during the 1970 AFL/NFL merger, they changed their name and moved to Foxborough in 1971.

Producing some of the league's greatest players — from AFL MVPs Gino Cappelletti and Jim Nance, to future Pro Football Hall of Famers John Hannah, Mike Haynes and Andre Tippett — the Patriots have fielded more than a few successful teams. The 1978 team won 11 games while setting a then-NFL rushing record that stood for 40-plus years with 3,165 yards. That year, the team's 11 wins tied the franchise record and earned the Patriots their second division title in team history and an opportunity to host their first home playoff game.

On Jan. 21, 1994, Kraft bought the Patriots from St. Louis native James Orthwein, keeping the franchise in New England. The Patriots went to the playoffs four out of the next five seasons and have become a modern-era dynasty, recording more than 20 seasons with at least 10 wins since Kraft purchased the team. Under the leadership of quarterback Tom Brady and Head Coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots dominated the division from 2001 to 2018, making nine Super Bowl appearances and winning six championships.

The Patriots are currently tied with the Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins in the NFL with six. The Patriots hold the NFL record for the most Super Bowl appearances with 11.

The Patriots’ home-field success has helped power a dynasty that has consistently propelled the Patriots into the playoffs. Since 2002, Gillette Stadium has hosted 23 playoff games, including seven AFC Championship Games.

The New England Patriots have made it to the Super Bowl 11 times, holding the NFL record for the most appearances in the championship game. They have six Super Bowl titles to their name — Super Bowl XXXVI (2002), XXXVIII (2004), XXXIX: (2005), XLIX (2015), LI (2017), and LIII (2019) — and are tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most victories in NFL history.

The Patriots were founded in 1959 as the Boston Patriots. After the team moved to a new stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, in 1971, they were renamed the New England Patriots. The original name choice was Bay State Patriots, but that was rejected by the NFL.

    Patriots from 20 rows up

by FlameDog on 2017-12-05Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

When tickets went on sale, I was able to secure a ticket at the goal line, 20 rows up behind the Patriots bench. Unbelievable sight lines, great atmosphere, super clean stadium, helpful staff. Just a tremendous experience.

Great game. We travel from Saint John NB, Canada at least once a year to go see a game and always have a good time. The weather was great, the people were great and the game was great.

    Patriots and Foxborough

by Gryphnmueller on 2016-08-15Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

Travelled to foxborough for the first time to watch the Patriots play the Saints. Pro's. Even for an exhibition game the stands were 95 percent full. Stadium is clean massive security and police presence on site people were super friendly. Was generally a younger and yet well behaved crowd They have a modern strip mall with restaurants attached to the stadium give you something to do if you get there early and don't want to tail gate. There was a live band playing outside one of the restaurants entertain patrons waiting to enter the stadium. The downside foxborough is in the middle of no where small town with one patriot place being the only hotel close by and was full up if you want to stay there book well in advance. If you could open a hotel in town you could make a killing well at least on event days Hotels in Boston and Providence were also full. I ended up staying in Fall River about 45 minutes from the venue. If your going to go make sure you get a hotel before buying tickets or just plan to get there early. The plus side police close down one of the oncoming lanes to allow for an extra lane of traffic in and out of the stadium at appropriate times. Great venue safe venue recommend for football games. Bring cash if your from Canada or overseas charge card machines and vendor booths weren't working for visa

Patriots at Home in Foxboro....Not to be Missed

by FlameDog on 2014-10-29Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

My first NFL game. Been to Patriot Place many times but never for a game. On site parking is $40.00 cash, gates open 4 hours before Game Time. So I was there at 9:00 for a 1:05 kickoff. Lots of traffic control, I felt very safe. The complex, both the shopping area and the stadium are very clean. Staff is tremendous. Sightlines in the stadium are fantastic and the sound is very clear without needing Heavy Metal decibels.
