Great Concert!
by MisterEntropy on 2015-01-31Jack Singer Concert Hall - CalgaryThis was certainly one of the best live concerts I've seen in quite some time. The Jack Singer hall was a perfect venue for her, intimate and relaxed. She was in fine fettle and gave a polished performance backed by a very capable band (keyboards, bass, six-string guitar, drums). It was obvious that she enjoys what she does and is more than willing to share with her audience--she spent a lot of time after the concert giving autographs and taking 'selfies' with fans. She did not have an opening act, with one intermission. The a cappella solo encore was a treat! She comes across as genuinely down-to-earth and it was great to meet her in person at the beginning of her career. She has an amazing instrument, knows how to use it, and has the talent to sing in a wide range of styles. I was particularly impressed by a new song that she performed which was pretty close to 'hard core' blues (i.e. Bessie Smith?)--how does someone so young have that ability? And the cover she performed of a Sam Smith song was amazing. The varied styles she performs resulted in a crowd that was also varied and somewhat 'dead' even thought she tried hard to get them up and moving. I believe that she is still trying to determine where she best fits, and I sincerely look forward to following her through the rest of her career. Her youth comes across very strongly, and is endearing. All in all, a great concert. I look forward to the next time I can see her perform live.
