Melodic Spirits was truly a profoundly moving performance by not only violin virtuoso Suzanne Hou, but also our very own Okanagan Symphony. It was as if Suzanne's presence inspired all our musicians to play their very best - and they truly gave an outstanding performance. Suzanne, however, stole the evening - in fact, we were all so stunned by her virtuosity, that it took a moment for us to respond with the standing ovation she so deserved. The incredible talent displayed so passionately on an extremely valuable violin only served to reduce us all to awe. My hands may struggle to produce a pleasing sound on the violin, or achieve the maximum effect in a piano piece, but one thing they were made to do, and do well, is applaud, and I don't think I have ever clapped louder, or harder, than in praise of Suzanne, her music, and our orchestra. Our response enticed her to play an encore, and she regaled us with another virtuosic piece, preceded by a very entertaining story that demonstrated the lovely personality our conductor, Rosemary Thompson, spoke so highly of. What a privilege for us all, here in the Okanagan, to experience firsthand the talents of artists like Suzanne, and to hear our symphony rise to new heights in sound!
Ringing in the Season was magical to say the least. Absolutely what people need to see to get them into the Christmas Spirit!! Bruce Hanzel wrote an incredible concerto that implemented the use of bongos......wow, wow, wow is all I can say. What an awesomely talented local find. The bell choir that was performing was something special. An absolute can not miss anytime they are in town. What an awesome evening!!!! I will never forget the feeling of joy and happiness the evening gave me personally!
The highlight was the hand bell ringers but the Marimba and drums were equally great. Audience participation was just right
If this would have been an entertainment/comic show, I guess it would have been alright. But I was expecting a Symphony Orchestra. I know I am not in Vancouver or Wien, and was prepared to waive the acoustic and grandeur which comes with a massive building, but in the Okanagan there are, nevertheless, over 100,000 people living, We are not that small that the conductor can not dress for the occasion, but instead t tried to compete with Jay Lenno's comic show. I am quite sure that the nice ladies from the Okanagan Handbell Chorus would have been a great addition to a children show. On this stage however, they looked silly and were only blocking the view to the talented musicions.in the background. From the music I heard I could tell that the symphony has talented musicions. What this Orchestra is missing is a conductor who dresses, looks and acts as one.
Great performance, the hand bell choir was amazing. Very interactive with audience participation for sing-along. Poor job on the event staff having people queing outside in below zero weather to get inside.
The bells were absolutely fabulous!! I have never heard bells with the symphony. Together this was an awesome performance.
What a great surpise, the symphony was very very good one of the best performances we've seen this year
The acoustics of the location are not the best, but the performance was fabulous. And we think Rosemary Thompson is fantastic.
We absolutely loved Requiem with the full choir and 4 opera singers. The director/conductor is very warm and inviting - and we appreciated the information at the beginning outlining the movement in Mozart's Requiem. Well done!
