On the Town is Bang On

by StraightArrow on 2015-07-22Lyric Theatre - New York

Superb dancing, memorable Leonard Bernstein music, imaginative set designs, humourous dialogue delivered with spot on timing by a talented cast .... a wonderful evening topped off by Centre Orchestra seats in Row A that transported us into the middle of every scene. Perfect. And what a special treat to see the wonderfully talented Fairchild siblings spin their magic in two productions in three days - first, the breathtakingly beautiful Megan as Ivy, the object of the madcap pursuits by our sailors on frenetic shore leave in On the Town, and then her brother Robert evoking memories of Gene Kelly as the love struck Jerry Mulligan in An American in Paris.

One of the best musicals to hit Broadway in years.

by TOMO on 2015-04-13Lyric Theatre - New York

A fantastically talented cast, brilliant orchestrations and dazzling choreography make this the penultimate showing experience. It's hats in the air cheering at the curtain call and you leave the theatre on a warm cloud of joy.

On the Town – great music/0 plot

by Tocritic on 2015-03-03Lyric Theatre - New York

Production numbers were terrific but the play itself is a series of songs barely connected by any dialogue. If anyone saw the original movie, there was so much more humour and human interest in three sailors and their search for love and adventure. For some reason when this translated into a play, all thought of dialogue and humour is gone. Except for a couple songs, most of the music is somewhat forgettable and very repetitive. There is barely any dialogue or acting whatsoever. The lady who plays the music teacher is extremely annoying and not very funny. Unfortunately she keeps turning up everywhere. There is much better musical theatre to see than this one.

    On The Town was great!!

by Framur on 2014-12-09Lyric Theatre - New York

The plot was dated, but the cast was superb. Triple threat performers who can sing, dance, and act beautifully and a score by Bernstein and story and lyrics by Comden and Green was a perfect way to spend an evening. The bonus surprise was hearing all the wonderful music played by a 30 piece orchestra and the songs performed by such glorious singers! On The Town is a helluva show!

    Fun but not amazing.

by Wicked4Good on 2014-11-09Lyric Theatre - New York

This show was really great and fun to watch. It was more like a dance show with some singing than a normal musical. It was still really good just not amazing. The dancing was awesome the singing was ok and the story could use some work.
