    Old but unbowed

by JonRox on 2013-12-08Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The Orchestra may not be the "original" ELO but they gave us a great night of nostalgic listening pleasure. Seeing classic songs like Sweet Talking Woman belted out took me back to the late 70s. Hit after hit played by a band who were really tight, it was such a shame that most of the audience wouldn't (or couldn't) get up and dance. I looked around to see bottoms stuck I moveable to seats all over the auditorium. From Living Thing to Mr Blue Sky the band had us mesmerized. Fascinating to hear the varied pedigrees of those on stage, including the former lead singer of Styx no less! and a rousing finale of Don't Bring me down. Maybe not ELO but still great to hear those old songs being played live in Calgary - instead of accompanying me while shopping at the COOP.

    More than we expected.

by BuyGones on 2013-12-03Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

What a great show. This was a birthday present for my wife. We were not sure what to expect, in fact between the two of us we could only name a couple of songs prior to the concert. From the opening song to the encore we would look at each other and say "I forgot they did this song" They really engaged the crowd. People were up dancing throughout the concert. The talent of the musicians, their history and how they came together was amazing.

    The orchestra...fantastic!

by ELOFan on 2013-12-03Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

We were so excited to get tickets to the orchestra and they did not disappoint in the least. They sounded amazing and their energy was fantastic. They played all my favourite songs, it felt like high school! I just wish they would have played a second night, cause I definitely would have gone then too. So fun LOVED IT!!!

    ELO Energetic but Disappointing

by ELOfan57 on 2013-12-03Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

What we loved about the original Electric Light Orchestra was that it was truly an orchestra! It included woodwinds, horns and string instruments - violins, cellos, bass. This version only featured one electric violin - very competently played by Mik Kaminski, the most "original" of the so called "former members". in fact he was the best in the show. The rest of the "orchestra" was made up of the standard guitars, keyboard, percussion... The group made a competent effort recreating the vocals - we weren't expecting to hear the original vocals. The sound system was lacking... it was really just a very loud tribute band and difficult to distinguish the lyrics. That said, it was a nostalgia trip for us 50 somethings and the band had a ton of energy that got almost everyone up on their feet at the end - especially with Don't Bring me Down

    sadly past their prime...

by mammmm on 2013-12-03Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Five of us went to the event....thought the Orchestra was playing and that former members of the ELO were going to be singing accompanying the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Even the emcee announced that "the orchestra is in the pit" What a disappointment The band were there...alone... The music was WAY TOO LOUD and we were not able to hear the words of the lyrics...and this was in a hall that has excellent accoustics The poor old keyboard artist who is in his seventies, had to be helped onto the stage using his cane, sat as his keyboard and there was no movement in this guy...he looked like he had had was having a stroke...no facial expression, no body movement....I felt SO sorry for him. He didn't appear to be enjoying anything....it was soooo sad. At the end, the other members helped him off the stage with his cane and then brought him back for the encore, all at what appeared extreme difficulty for this poor old man. There were many empty seats and the band kept encouraging people to move forward...and as they did so, many more people left.... I think they would have had a better concert if they had turned the volume down a lot, and also if they had played in a smaller venue. My party of 5 were extrememly disappointed

    Another bucket list checkmark!

by Worththedrive on 2013-12-03Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

My 23 year old daughter and I drove up from Lethbridge to see ELO and we were not dissappointed at all. She recognized most of the songs and commented on how well they sounded for their age. I was also pleasantly surprised at the quality of the performance. What a delightful way to spend a Saturday evening!
