    A Magic Night

by ising4jesus on 2018-05-27National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I guess I really didn't know what to expect when I booked the tickets for the Ottawa Storytellers. They are, however, exactly what their name says they are...Storytellers. And I can honestly say, they did a marvelous job telling the story of The Tour. Adapting a story as intricate as this one is would have been hard, but this group was up for the challenge. Having already read the book, my mind filled in the missing parts. My husband, who has never read it, was just settling in, wanting more. The storytellers themselves abound in talent. They took the words of the story and wove a picture that made you feel like you were there, hearing the conversations, seeing the characters. Inflection of voice, facial expression all worked together to produce a magic, making the evening one of the most enjoyable times that I've ever experienced.

    Wonderful stories....

by LordRobinson on 2016-03-20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

A perfect evening at the NAC 4th Stage listening to Mike Burns weaving a tapestry of tales from Irish Folklore and from his own life experiences. A full audience sat quietly in the candle light enjoying the words of a true Storyteller. With his rich narrative painting a scene in the listeners mind and immersing them in the textures of the story. I have attended several Ottawa Storyteller productions and they have all been very entertaining.

    Excellent music and storytelling

by LordRobinson on 2015-12-20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Wonderful evening of peaceful harp music and stories from long ago. As a fan and player of traditional Irish music, I enjoyed hearing about the life of someone whose music I play. I have attended other Ottawa Storytellers events and they always captivate the audience with the on stage presence of the performers.. A small stage with 3 performers and a single instrument filled the room with the life and music of one of Irelands most amazing musicians. The NAC 4th Stage is perfect venue for the Ottawa Storytellers and I hope to attend many more of their performances.

    The poet ,at his best...

by LordRobinson on 2015-01-18National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

On a very frosty winter night, the words and music of Scotland's national poet warmed me to the core. This is the first time I have attended an event hosted by the Ottawa Story Tellers. The cafe setting of the NAC 4th Stage was the perfect intimate venue for this event. The performers told the story of Robert Burn's life and presented some of his best words and songs in a manner that did the man proud. From his humorous writings , very romantic poetry, to his fiercely nationalistic anthems. Each performer played his/her part with passion and exuberance. Culminating in a sing along with the members of the audience. My Burns would be very pleased with this presentation.

    Achilles was extremely ticked off

by AnneandRuss on 2014-06-17National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

You'll never have seen anything like this, and probably, if you missed it, never will. 18 storytellers made the last half or so of Homer's _Iliad_ into an arresting, compelling, breathless social event. Over 150 people packed into the NAC Fourth Stage hung on every word of what you'd have expected to be a boring old pile of killing and savagery. The parts you skipped over when you read it in school (Haephaestus creating Achilles' new armor, the funeral of Patroclus) became compelling because we were all there listening, with nothing else to do but attend. Nicely paced, with regular breaks and longer pauses for lunch and dinner, the day really didn't seem long enough. 20 hours, they said, it would have taken for the whole thing, and we could easily have stayed for that.

In the bottom line section, it asks if I'd recommend this to a friend. Not only would I do so, but within 12 hours of the show I had already done so, and had put a note in my own calendar for next fall to look for another show - I would come back myself again and again. Mike is an absolutely wonderful storyteller and everyone should take the time out of their lives to come and spend an evening with him.

    A House Divided was riveting

by clutterqueen on 2012-01-21National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The performers were riveting, both in their story telling and music making. I doubt there was a dry eye in the house when performers and audience sang The Battle Hymn of the Republic at the end.

The performers were fantastic, the show was well run, and it was a welcoming atmosphere to be in.
